How many people think that sub mods are worth using? I have never bothered.

What time does not pervert, it destroys outright.
From this we may conclude that there are no eternal truths, no limitless passions.
There are only subtle deceptions.

How about: I run my own modifications on top of the original?

Definetely yes , if you can't see a reason for this I have three words for you which should be convincing enough to start experimenting with submods .
Force Diplomacy Minimod .

It depends solely upon you. If you want my oppinion, you can use many submods that will enhance your gaming experience. I will number certain submods that I personally enjoy:
1) Force Diplomacy Minimod. If you are a roleplay-er, this one is a must.
2) AI Battle Formations Minimod. Just gives the AI a better tactical ability, but don't expect any miracles.
3) Command Stars and Corsus Honorum Minimod. I use this one solely because it gives Command Stars easier. I hate it if a Strategos of mine that has won so many victories has less than 5 stars.
4) Extended Offices Minimod. I like this mainly for RPing reasons.
5) City Mod. Excellent mod, gives some bonuses to several buildings, enables paved roads for some barbaroi and keeps population growth in check by allowing only specific cities to grow into Huge size. The latter can be modified at will and can be done even in mid-campaign being savegame compatible.
6) Roma Surrectum textures. Not really a minimod, rather than the collection of files you have to put in a specific folder in order to get RS' campaign map textures. They look absolutely gorgeous.
There are probably others I miss, but I suggest you take a look yourself and try/judge later.

Most definately. Though being somewhat lazy, I use Lz3's mod pack that does it all in one go!
City mod is a must especially if you like playing the "civilised" factions.
AI formation mods help.
Forced diplomacy is a real help.
For Romans the allied legion mod is a must.
And do they make the game less stable? I don't think so I've played right through to AD14 and had very few CTD's and none were critical.

Completed; Rome AD14!
I don't think I could even dream of playing without the City Mod. And the minimod pack is a very nice addition and spices up gameplay.
Overall I think EB is better two-fold with at least Force Diplomacy and the City Mod, but that's just IMO.
The Gods envy us.
They envy us because we are mortal, because any moment might be our last.
Everything is more beautiful because we are doomed.
You will never be lovlier than you are now.
We will never be here again.
