Thread: CNN site hates my PC
Beirut 18:57 06-29-2009
When I go to the CNN.com site, my net freezes up and I get an error message. "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close... yaddah-yaddah." I get this nine out of ten visits. I'm a news junkie and this is killing me.

I run AVG 8.5 and Ad-Aware every day, I run Clean Cache once every week or two, and I don't have this problem on any other site. Only CNN.com. Been like this for months.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks.

Ping cnn.com in cmd. See if that works. Maybe try with a proxy or a different browser.

Use FireFox?

Your problem could be caused by alot of things- anywhere from problems with the site to a corrupt plugin or malware. I've also heard the AdAware isn't up to snuff anymore- you might want to try something like SuperAntiSpyware.

Start, run, "cmd"

You will see a DOS screen. Then type the following:
ping cnn.com

Copy paste the results, Beirut.

Cool, thanks.

Exactly as follows:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

(I left out the IP number in case it was my own and someone might use it to steal my beer.)

Maybe CNN is IP blocking Canada? It could happen. They've never apologized for Celine Dion or Bryan Adams. They deserve whatever happens to them.

Now now, the Canadian Government has apologized for Bryan Adams on several occasions.

If it makes you feel better, a ping of CNN.com got the same time out from my end, while totalwar.org came out fine.

edit: however firefox and IE both have no problems getting to it... strange.

Many sites have their routers/firewalls ignore ping requests to help against DoS attacks. That's probably the reason you're getting time outs.

Can you access it through a proxy, like www.ftunnel.net?

How are you trying to "get" there? A Favorites link? If so, maybe that's mangled. If you type in 'C N N' into google, does it take you there?

Interesting, I'll try that.

I always just type "c" in the address bar at the top and the rest just pops up and I click it.

Have you updated your flash player? Sites like CNN using flash based ads tend to result in application death if flash player is outdated.

An adblocker like ie7pro would be helpful too.
