    Default Community Service

Well im a soon to be senior in high school. My resume is pretty good, 4.3 gpa, 1960 sat, two varsity sports of which im captain of one already and possibly one next year. But i need community service. The entire concept makes me sick to my stomach. We arent give in service, we are simply working for college points. So i am not like those resume padders, i do what needs to be done and nothing else. at least i am honest about my dislike for service. i hear so many kids say things like, "oh im just gonna do another hundred hours at my church, that'll get me in" Now i do do service, im a lecter at my church and i do alot of boosters stuff and im in a club called fbla, future business leaders of america. Just all the fake service makes me angry (plus its hurting my college admissions.

so you are complaining how community service is just to pad your resume?
i hear you. for NHS they require 60 hours of service. ok, great, its good for the community, but most people lie about it and dont do any service at all. and the people who do the service they usually are doing it becuase they have to.

I think it is a different NHS to what I am thinking of.

You can get away with lying about stuff on your resume in the states? Over here it's a lot harder. True story, I know a guy who lied about something on his university personnel statement. Some way or another they found out and he got thrown of the course half way into his first year. Felt sorry for him but on the other hand he shouldn't of lied.

    Moral of the story, honesty.

my school required 180hours by the end of your senior year before you could graduate... Luckily they had 4 day weeks in feb march april during your senior and junior year to do the 180 hours.

Wow, maybe dropping high school and picking up my GED actually had an advantage.

I'm torn, on the one hand I'm not sure they should be forcing people to do community service (kind of takes the point out of volunteering) and on the other I can't see how it would hurt anyone to have to...

I guess when I start to sympathize in the slightest with making kids do things they don't want to it's a sign of my impending old age (a decrepit 25 right now ).

i agree with you, its a horrible thing to lie about something that just happens to be necessary for the NHS, which capitalizes on integrity, of all things. but the NHS leadership only checks with the school if they did the required hours, and because 1/3 of the school is in NHS, they dont really care if we did our hours.

but im going to do my hours.

Bah, im in NHS, its a load of crap. i go to a competitive catholic high school, so like everyone is in the damn thing, even though ive seen some of those people drunk out of their minds at parties. Its outrageous. (and yes lots of people lie about their hours, which are for god, *rolls eyes*)

You are fine. As long as you have the appropriate GPA/SAT Scores you are golden. The other crap just helps...Besides it already sounds like you have more than enough extracurriculars

Me: "I only lack 1 unit of English to graduate. Can't I just attend only that class? I need a job; family's broke."
Principal: "No. You gotta stay all day. Take 6 electives: typing, etc."
Friend: "There's this thing called a GED..."
New Boss: "Welcome to the Post Office."
Draft Board: "You've lost your student deferment. You're now 1A."

    One year later:

Nixon: "Greetings. You have been selected..."
Drill SGT: "Attention!" "Eight weeks from now, strange people will try to kill you. Pay attention to me, and you might survive."

Kukri's personal comedy-adventure of unanticipated consequences began...

Moral: get as much schooling as you can, for as long as you can, even when the requirements seem stupid or irrelevant. Cuz life is gonna give you twists and turns you can't possibly anticipate today, and your educational background will help you in ways you can't even imagine now.
Be well. Do good. Keep in touch.
