    Default Rome Total War Error

    Hello all,

I've just wanted to re-install my copy of Rome: Total War. I have vanilla, but I'm trying to patch it to 1.3, then 1.5, and then either RTR or EB.

My problem lies with patching it. It works now, but I cannot patch 1.3 for some reason. Everytime I get the .zip (from many sources) I seem to have it "corrupt" or something similar. None have worked and I even tried the link from the Colosseum "Useful Links" sticky.

    Can I get some help?

This is the error I get:

"Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded the file, try downloading it again."

Use a download manager. Just in case. Or download the .exe, not the .zip file.

Do you have any sites where I can find the .exe that work? I do not have download manager or know what it is. Thanks a lot Caius.

    For the 1.3 to 1.5 patch. I couldn't find the 1.3 exe.
Edit: In fact, that is not the file that you are looking for. I'd suggest that you use fileplanet to download the 1.3 patch.

Alright got it to 1.5. I was thinking it was my computer because no source was working, but it looks like fileplanet did the trick. Thanks for that, you're an awsome, amazing Argentinian admired always.

As if I haven't been helped enough...

Everytime I try to instal Europa Barbarum I get a corrupt file error. I'm getting it straight from the filefront given on their website. My Rome: Total War is on my D: drive because my C: drive is too full so I put the install of EB on the D: drive as well. Even then it says it's a corrupt file.

    I thank you.

Well, I de-activated my firewall so I could install EB and I'm still getting a corrupt file message. (This is a mirror site, not torrent - I don't know how to torrent).

It sounds like your Installation of RTW is on your c: drive correct? The reason it is coming back corrupt is that EB will install into the RTW directory on your c: drive which is out of space. What you need to do is either uninstall RTW and install it on your d: drive or clean out your c: drive and make 3-4 gigabytes of room for EB and your page file.

You should do that regardless. EB is a big program, and requires a lot of space to run. You won't find many players that aren't willing to sacrifice several other games in order to have EB on their comp though. Well worth it.

The problem was, my Rome Total War is already on the D: drive. I put it there from the start.

so long as rtw is on the d:\ then it should not really be a problem ... what O/S are you running btw? .. also what error are you getting when you go to install EB .. (you putting it in the same directory as rtw?) . just to make sure.

I'm running on XP. I get an error saying:

"The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program"

Well my C: doesn't have the space so I just put the EB.exe file in the D: drive. I can't even run the .exe. It gives me that message before I even enter the installation phase.

I also want to mention that I've tried getting Rome Total Realism with the same result. And this is AFTER I put down my firewall temporarily and tried everything in the D: drive.

so are you saying that you get this message when attempting to install ?

the file is kinda big i guess , do you often have errors downloading single large files ? could be high packet loss or something corrupting the file structure.

or is this after you install

This error is after I install (taking 45 min - 1 hour) and the .exe seemingly doesn't work. I don't even get to the installation process in reality. I just get through installing the .exe file.

It's big, yes and I wouldn't be able to put it on my c: drive because it's too full at the moment. I am putting it on the D: drive and it's still not working though. I guess I have some problems because like I said, Rome: Total Realism is giving me the same problem. I get the .exe and then it will not work.

How might I fix this high packet loss?

Thanks for all your help so far, by the way.

have you tried downloading EB v1.1 again? It may have been corrupted when you downloaded it the first time. Also how much free space do you have on your d: drive? how much free space on your c: drive? When was the last time you ran a defrag on your d: drive?

I've tried downloading EB v1.1 many times (that is the problem one, not the 1.2 patch). I've also uninstalled RTW and started over patching up to 1.5.

On my D: drive I have 6.66 GB
    C: drive I have 51 MB

Haven't defragged in a while. I'll do it today.

If I am not mistaken, you should have at least 100mb free space in Drive C.

That may be the problem. Try free some space up to 1G is better. BTW, what's the size of your downloaded EB1.1 exe?

Well the only games other than Rome: Total War (which is on D: drive) are

Red Orchestra - 3,706 MB and it's mod
    Darkest Hour - 6,674 MB

For some reason I have 2 Red Orchestra files (the other has a different number of MB, but similar)

I also noticed as I was looking at this, that every message I get in ICQ or MSN is taking off .2 or more MB from my C: drive. I need to find all the history of these messages and delete them.

I'm going to have to try and find out where all my space is being taken up. I have plenty of programs sure, but they're only a few MB each - what may be killing me is the history of those messages

BTW, what's the size of your downloaded EB1.1 exe?
Something like 750 MB, or in that area. I deleted it until I could figure this out so I don't know exactly

Okay I stand corrected. I looked at my C: drive and now I see there is a "Sierra" folder containing Caeser 3 and Empire Earth games totalling 1 GB of memory in all. I tried to deleting the ******* things and they will not delete!

Error: "Cannot delete file .... : Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"

Both games are uninstalled and not in use. God, the harder I try the deeper this mess goes

Try uninstalling those and not actually deleting them. Also empty your recycle bin and try using the disk cleanup feature in the start\all programs\accessories\system tools menu. You must free up more space on your c: drive to allow proper operation of your page file. Typically you will need 2 times the amout of physical memory free on your c: drive. example: if you have 1 gig of memory you will need 2 gigs of free space on your c: drive.

Also use shift+delete instead of just delete. This will cause the files to be permanently deleted and not go to the recycle bin.

Well I have 6.66 GB of free space on my D: drive, but how much will I need on my C: drive to be able to get the .exe to my D:drive game where I want it? Over what I have now I guess considering I'm under 100 MB. Over 1GB? 2?

My Swap (E:) is at 88.4 MB of 996 MB
Cache (F:) is 7.66 MB of 156 MB

Don't know if either of these matter much, but thought I'd give all the info I could.

I will try to figure out this clearing space issue.

Make sure your drive-organization skills are adequate. I usually don't go around recommending software, but there's good freeware that you might like to at least try out (and might end up using them for a long time).

CCleaner, formerly known as Cr*p Cleaner, is a piece of freeware that empties out bad registry files, history files, and a bunch of stuff that I frankly don't know the ins n outs off.

Defraggler is good for having good amount of detail when defragmenting, which will make your software run faster.

To second what Xurr said, you really need to uninstall software and not delete. So, if you already have deleted software, go ahead and clean registry (scan for errors n correct them) using CCleaner mentioned above.

    Good luck and good day!
