    Default New installations causing trouble.

    Hi all!

I've had EB for a few months, and LOVED it. Incredible. The best mod of any mod I've played for any game.

After wrestling with it for quite some time, I managed to get it up and running on my Vista PC. I happily found that CTD's and the like were fairly rare, and everything worked like a charm.

Then, just last week, I made some changes.

I put Microsoft Office on the computer and installed an anti-virus program, "Trend Micro Internet Security Pro."

These are the only changes I'm aware of, except that once I accidentally turned user account control on. It was, of course, turned off soon after.

And then I noticed a few odd things.

First of all, the game took even LONGER than usual to start up. This doesn't really bother me, I just thought I'd mention it so you might be able to get a better idea of what's going on.

Then I started a campaign. In the first 2 turns, it crashed. Now, I've learned to expect crashes, so that was OK. I loaded it up again and did the same action that made it crash. It did NOT crash a second time, so I assume that was a fluke.

But the real problem was with custom battles. When I click the custom battles option, everything starts to slow down. The mouse becomes slightly choppy.

Then I picked the map and proceeded to select factions. It was even choppier.

Then I picked the units. Each screen got slower and slower, and by this time the cursor was very slow, sluggish, and choppy.

Then I started the game. It was fine; worked nice and smooth.

Then, scrolling around the map (I was collecting screenshots for my AAR), it crashed. This has happened 3 times so far, and that was in two sittings.

So what really concerns me is the slowness of the custome battle screen and the way it crashes during the battle.

I'm inclined to think that it's because of the new programs I installed. I turned off the web protection program, but that didn't help.

So does anybody know what's going on? I'd appreciate any help and/or advice.

    Thanks!

Did you run any virus scans? If so, were any RTW or EB files removed/quarantined? Try restoring them if possible.

Try downloading and installing the various Microsoft Visual Studio C++ redistributable's as MS likes to call 'em: those are basic C++ standard libraries virtually all Windows C++ software depends on. Perhaps they have been replaced by incompatible/buggy versions.

If all else fails, try installing a defragmenter like JKDefrag: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=JKDefrag (Google search)

OOOH, I didn't think of that!

Yes, I have run a couple virus scans. The only things it registered deleting were cookies.

Although, I used a program before that did all kinds of stuff.

So yeah, that might be it. Should I reinstall?

In any case, what can I do to keep EB stuff from being targeted in the future?

So I have come to realize that the problem must indeed be my virus software.

However, I need that virus software on the PC. If I reinstall EB, will they be able to coexist peacfully? What changes can I make to my security setting to make sure that they will?

Anyways, I've been planning to put the force diplomacy mod on there for my AAR. Also, I've wanted to try out EB on BI instead of vanilla, so I'll just uninstall>reinstall and redo it all.

About 75% of users have that problem.

But I suppose it could be for a variety of reasons, some of which depend on your PC and settings.

However, since it's going to vanilla, it would seem that the PC is not being routed into the EB folder upon startup, which means that although you've installed EB, it's not really connecting with vanilla like it needs to to work.

Did you make sure to install EB outside of Program files?

Also, you should install EB 1.2, which is like a huge patch for 1.1
