Messed up installation

I've played MTW and VI for bloody years now, installed and uninstalled it many a time for various reasons. However no matter what I do I can't seem to fully uninstall VI, I can install MTW just fine, install the patches etc and it runs perfectly.

Then I get to VI, yet it gives me the option of uninstalling VI, despite the fact it clearly isn't installed in the first place. Meaning I have to actually go to setup on the disc itself and run it that way. Actually clicking on uninstall on the autoplay menu does nothing, and often i'm informed that it can't locate the uninstall file.

Anyway all appears well once installed, but this clearly isn't the case as the patches don't seem to work then, and no amount of tinkering resolves that age-old bug of kings dying at 56. Also it doesn't seem to change the game completely, sometimes the desktop icon remains the old MTW one, and sometimes it won't even recognise that VI is installed. Which is more than abit perplexing.

Can anybody think of a reason why this is happening? I've deleted every single scrap of everything even closely related to this game from my computer that I can find, there doesn't seem to be anything more I can do to convince my computer that its gone so I can install it again fresh. I'm not particularly computer savvy, but all the same, uninstalling a game generally takes care of itself so i'm somewhat puzzled by this.

You know, I've actually run into that exact same problem a couple times myself. I'm trying to remember how I got around it -- I want to say the solution had something to do with using a different install path than normal, but I'm not sure if that was what did the trick.

1) Go to add/remove programs and completely uninstall the game (both MTW and VI).

2) Delete the MTW/VI installation directory.

3) Reinstall MTW to C:\MTW

- Cancel any autorun launchers

- Go to the MTW CD in your CDROM drive and run "setup.exe"

4) When MTW is installed, install VI to C:\MTW

- Cancel any autorun launchers

- Go to the VI CD in your CDROM drive and run "setup.exe"

This should work. There is usually no need to regedit out any entries with MTW as you can force install multiple MTW/VI installations by using the "setup.exe". VI also allows you to force install to a directory of your choice.

Ugh; don't remind me. What a nipple-twistingly frustrating period that was....


Anyway.... Please let us know if Caravel's solution works, _Aetius_! No one should be deprived of their MTW/VI if they can reasonably help it.
