    Default COD4 and COD:MW2

so im looking for a new shooter. i beat R6V1, and will buy R6V2, but not yet. maybe later on in the year. so i began looking at COD4.
so far, im very impressed. ive heard a ton about the game and how addictive the game is, both single player and MP.
but i asked a friend and he said to wait for COD: modern warfare 2, which comes out in november.
i can get COD4 for $20 off ebay, brand new, never opened.
so as of now, thats my plan. buy COD4 now, play it until maybe september (ill also be playing ETW at that time, so that should slow things down a bit), buy R6V2, play that until november, then get COD:MW2.

anyone think that this is a bad idea?

COD4 for $20 is a steal. Get it.

The single player mode is short, maybe around 4-6 hours depending on difficulty, but it's very engaging. It takes the COD formula (which is a rail shooter at heart) and pushes it to its limits with a compelling story, hectic firefights and varied gameplay.

Multiplayer is.. alright. Trust me I know it's fun but there are way too many knife rushers and SMG spammers. Not to mention Martyrdom users (drop a live grenade when you die)! However i'd be completely lying if I said I didn't lose myself in that game 8 months ago. Worth $20? Oh heck yes. Will its appeal to you last as long as you want it? Now that I couldn't say.

how is the campaign replayability fare? with some FPS games the campaign can be played over and over.

bear in mind im getting the PC version.

I found it enjoyable to play through multiple times. But you have to remember it's still a rail shooter, so your milage may vary. Me? I'm a sucker for good storytelling and that is exactly what CoD4 is.

a rail shooter may actually be what im looking for. i found the crysis campaign, despite being able to do many different things, pretty boring at most times, even at the expert levels.

You'll have fun! I got bored half-way through Crisis and Farcry2 single player, and returned to COD4 multiplayer.

I admit i'm comparing single with multiplayer there... IMO COD4's single player campaign is short, but very sweet. As Monk says, the storytelling is great -especially how gameplay and cut-scene cross over through special missions/story sections. All I'll say is that gunships kick ass.

For me, COD4 was so good it really benchmarked the genre. Even playing the COD5 beta just felt wrong, because of the little differences -I've never felt so "comfortable" in the control of my avatar in the game.

I should add that neither Crisis or Farcry2's multiplayer did it for me either. Not since Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory have I enjoyed multiplayer so much.

Anyway, you've be getting it soon now so I guess you'll be enjoying it for yourself!

I've summed up my feelings for COD5 already, suffice to say after 4 it was a huge letdown for me. I went into it knowing what I was getting but even when expecting a copy+paste ww2 game I was surprised by how boring it was. Not to mention how disgusting the gore levels were for me.

Let me give you some perspective - I play a game so over the top in its violence that you can saw people in half with a chainsaw (Gears of War 2) and yet it was CoD5 that actually managed to turn my stomach with its gore levels. The first time I blew someone's arm off with a shotgun I was like "Oh yeah!" the second time around, however, it felt really really awkward. Gears of war seeks to be so over the top in its violence that it's hard to take it seriously, or for anything else than a good time. CoD5 feels far too serious, and thus I can't laugh off the gore levels.

edit: I'm not kidding. When i saw someone get both legs blown off from a land mine I had to turn off the game for a little while. I hope MW2 doesn't have all that messy gore...

You cannot separate limbs in CoD4. The most you get are blood splashes/splatters.

kind of like in Rainbow 6 vegas?
the blood splatter system in R6V was truly excellent.
if you shot a man anywhere there wasnt a protective vest, you got a blood hole on the body, and often blood splatter on the walls. is the blood splatter system the same in COD4?

I loved that game. I borrowed it off my cousin back when it first came out and it's the best shooter I've ever played. One of the best things in it, and something that missing in a lot of games now a days is how hard it was. When ever you finished a level you felt like you'd achieved something. Possible spoiler
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The ghillie suit snipering level was the best in the entire game, I even lost sight of my mate a few times when I first played it

And there is plenty of replay value, especially if you start on a low level and try a harder level on each play through. The ending however is very abrupt and I didn't realise that I had finished the game until the credits rolled.

I think this review explains the game rather well. WARNING: the review has very bad language.

I actually cried after the last marine mission the first time I played it. It felt so much like black hawk down.

ok so i got the game, breezed through the first two levels (i must say, sniping is insanely fun in this game!) and now im at the TV station shooting it out with the terrorists. its really hard because there are so many grenades. but its also a heckuva lot of fun, most fun ive ever had with a shooter.
full review pending once i finish.

btw im playing on normal, then ill go to hard and onwards.

Grenades are your doom for the whole game, not so hot on the campaign. The multiplayer is among the finest out there, some weapons are a bit overpowered but it's really fun to unlock perks and attachments, and the game rewards you for using everything because weapon challenges give you mucho experience, it's a really rewarding experience. My only complaint is that there are too many campers, I like run&gun IN YOU FACE DIEDIEDIE not having to check every corner for lamers.

    For MP: CoD 2 < Cod:WaW < CoD4

What is Call of Duty MP without a Kar98? Not as good as it could be.

CoD4 was also the first game in the CoD series to introduce the perk system and silencers. And martyrdom. Teh horror. Takes less skills than ever to get kills in MP.

I kind of like the ranking system though; since it puts to display how much time you've spent - or wasted - playing the game online. To bad the PC version does not have the prestige mode.

CoD4 is my first CoD game and I have no problem with martyrdom, it has a few uses but after a while you just know not to run towards every dead person. Looking forward to MW2 and I'm actually skipping WaW because the WW2 setting and the Kar98 bore me.

also, if you play on normal difficulty, there arent too many grenades, just enough to keep you on your toes, and plenty of enemies.

When I first played the Mutiplayer on COD4....I didn't like it
but after a while it kinda grew on me....but it really made me happy after I found the "Plant the bomb, one life mode" (Can't recall the name for the life of me)
It really supports campers.. but the trick is to use grenades ALOT
I used more grenades on there, then on "capture the area mode?" 90% of it is throwing grenades near the computer

Since you have one life...you need to pick your options...on defense you camp or run to the nearest point they might go On offense you really need to plant that bomb ASAP or be prepared to lose...(anything goes in that mode...hard to be cheap when you have one life)
