How much technological nous does your father have? If he doesn't know a great deal about computers you can just make up about how it will increase the speed of the internet somewhat and be much, much more secure. In short, let him see self-interest in this, whilst not bringing up what you have to gain from it.

Also I have to say I think that asking why you are banned from the main computer is a good idea.

hes kinda tech savy. he still is majorly ignorant when it comes to hardware for computers (i convinced him about 2 years ago that we needed more RAM for our old desktop, and i did it by saying newer flash drives wont work if we dont have enough RAM- we only had 256 mb )
but hes also smart enough to see when im pulling the wool over his eyes, so ill need some proof of my claims.

I must admit, I'm more than a little confused about the tech issue here.

A Router needs a net connection, most are modems in their own right, but even then I don't think you can have two modems connected and working on one line.

Sounds like you need a router for the desktop anyway, and that will come with wireless as standard, allowing you to surf the net.

    Here's the thing though:

You shouldn't be stealing and you shouldn't be going behind your parents' backs. If you're being punished for something, then I think you should suck it up and earn their trust, not try to get around them. Fact is, you don't need to play computer games, it won't kill you not to. Hell, at the start of this year I had no net for about 2 months, I lived.

Alternatively, if you've been banned for practical reasons it's probably because your Dad found something on the PC that shouldn't have been there and traced it back to you.

YOU KNOW YOUR FATHER BETTER THAN ME, SO USE THIS ADVICE WITH DUE CARE!

You walk up to yer ol' man wearing cardboard boxes with shiny paint that look like circuits on them, (use your imagination here...Also it would help if you were in the dark, while wearing a flourescent frisbee on your head), you look him square in the eye, (use a chair if you're really young), and say

    "Pappy; I am TRON.

    I come from the interweb!

Provide me with access to my people and in their gratitude they will deliver unto you Free Porn"

If your dad is a church going man you WILL get in deep trouble for the latter part of that...But if he's around a certain age; saw a movie called Tron & liked it, the painted cardboard suit & frisbee hat has the potential to be a hit.

Course you can just offer to do (in advance) a bucket load of chores in exchange.

Something that you should consider before any of this though, is your family.

Your parents have to keep a roof over your head, (& times aren't great atm), so may be they think spending money on, food, clothes, health care, & your education, are more important than free porn.

Sux to be old but there it is and hell man it ain't WOW worthy but who in their right minds wants to go there, atm you have truly Free Porn! Enjoy

yes, i know i shouldnt be stealing and thats another reason why i need to get a router. when i was first caught my dad wanted to buy a router but somewhere in the process the idea got stalled and we never got it.
and i finally remember why im banned from the main computer. back last summer i overused the computer. i would go on too often and he was worried that i was addicted. though i have since proven hm otherwise, he still bans me. except for school work but i do that on my laptop anyways.

so i think i have a plan to get the router:
i ask him why i can get a router for the family.
i present the facts and how you can put limits on the usage of the router and a web filter and all that other info.
tell him theres a great deal on at newegg.com for a really good router, and it ends in four days (its $30 less than the original price).
tell him ill do more chores and stuff like that to earn it, and ill even buy the router with my own money.

tada! my dad is a sucker for sales.

Well, you say you're still stealing, so maybe your old man has a point. If you want to impress him you might try going on a fitness kick, that improved my relationship with my Father a few years ago.

Do genuine manly stuff, run a couple of miles a few times a week, chop wood with an axe etc.

staying in shape isnt my problem. i go running + lift weights at least 3 times a week. and he doesnt know that im still using my neighbors wifi.

but as i was doing my pre-sabbath chores (with a bit more vigor than usual, i might add) he told me, "im glad to see that you want to work towards your router."
so theres hope for me yet! it may take a while, but i definitely think i can do it.

It would indeed be strange to get a broadband modem that isn't a router, but most come with just a standard router for free when you sign up to the plan, you usually have to pay extra to get wireless. At least that's how it is here in Oz, but I know our internet is pretty backwards compared to the rest of the world. Take Hooah's connection for example, unless it's basically dialup speed then most gamers here would probably find it more than sufficent for gaming.
