    Default Rise of Flight

Rise of Flight appears to be the WWI flight sim that all Great War enthusiasts have wanted since Red Baron 3D.

I say appears because it has only been available for a few weeks. I don’t know if there are plans to sell it in stores anywhere, at least in the States. I ordered it from Amazon for $36 US.

There is mandatory online registration and automatic updates will occur when patches are available. The first update will give you 2 new planes bringing the total flyable count to 4. 3 extra plans are available for sale now with more to follow. The price is $7.62 US per plane.

The graphics and flight models are superb. MP is included as well as SP missions and campaigns. The Russians at 777Studios have done a splendid job.

I’m having a grand time with it. God, it’s been so long since Red Baron!

I'm thinking of getting it. I read a bunch of reviews and it looks good, and I'm very interested in WWI. I don't like the you-must-connect-every-time-you-play stuff, I find it egregiously rude and insulting, and I might not buy it because of that. I don't know.

How is the single-player side of the game, as I would rarely, if ever, play online? And I am delighted to read any thoughts ytou have on the sim.

How good are the artillery barrages, is it a good show? And what about the ground action, be it vehicles moving about or battles?

RoF does indeed “call home” at start-up. If I disconnect my ISP it won’t run. It looks for updates and probably verifies the key. I suspect that one could install the game on more than one PC and so long as you don’t play them both simultaneously you’d be OK but that’s a guess on my part.

Neoqb is the design company. I’m not sure about the role of 777studios.

I play SP exclusively but may look into MP when co-op missions are introduced. Flying in MP against aficionados with PCs having 3 monitors and TrackIr wouldn’t be very much fun for me. I’d be toast!

The SP campaigns are a series of single missions like they were in Red Baron. They get mixed up every time and there is a fair amount of variety.

One of the strongest aspects of the game, after one has digested the beautiful aircraft and terrain, is the large number of game play options RoF offers. The controls are all configurable as are the views from the cockpit. You can have as much or as little realism as you like. I use the realistic flight model but I let the AI handle the radiator flaps, the RPM monitoring and the engine temperature. I also make free use of the autopilot and time compression too. Otherwise you can spend a lot of time cruising without any action.

There is a map you can bring up in the game upon which friendly and/or enemy icons will appear if you so desire. You can choose the length of missions from long to immediate engagement.

The “pay for planes” business model is one I like. Sure, I’d have rather had 20 flyable planes to begin with. The hope is that the revenue stream from new planes could keep the game fresh and interesting while allowing the devs at Neoqb to make more content such as flyable/crewable multi-engine bombers and maybe even zeppelins! Why not fly on the Eastern Front or on the Italian/Austrian front? Perhaps we can someday if the money will pay the bills. Flight sims will never make profit like WoW or even Total War. So I’m willing to give this approach shot.

The front is shrouded in smoke and is continuously bombarded. Shell bursts with dirt fountains are common. I have strafed and bombed vehicles along roads but can’t say I’ve seen any tanks despite flying cover for tank attacks. Artillery emplacements can be found and attacked. Neoqb’s ambitions for the future include more ground vehicles. I have witnessed tracers going back and forth in No Man’s Land. Flack is done very well, looking and sounding very convincing.

I’ll answer any more questions as best I can.

I wonder if its possible to do a 3 way hook up on a monitor so you can have it as though you can just turn your head and quite literally immerse yourself in the cockpit.

Like three monitors? They had that set up in a video on their site.
