Thread: Ancient Settlements

    Default Ancient Settlements

Hello, I've noticed that Iberian surnames (and possible those of other factions) either end in "coi" or "kum". The ones that end in "kum" like "Lusotanakum" and "Edetakum" or "Turdetakum" appear to be rooted in the latin names of tribes, in these cases, Lusitani, Edetani, Turdetani. The ones that end in "coi" like "Conistorgicoi" and "Olisipocoi" or "Numanticoi" appear to be rooted in settlement names, in these cases, Conistorgis (of the Conii), Olissipo (of the Lusitani) and Numantia (of the Arevaci).

This leads me to the following questions:
    1) Am I correct in my assumptions above?
    2) If yes, does this mean that the EB has a long list of barbarian settlements?
    2) If yes, is the EB team willing to share it?

The reason why I ask this, is that I am helping in a mod for Europa Universalis III set in the same period of Europa Barbarorum, and I'm having difficulty finding settlement names for the various tribes of the West, namely Iberia, in which I'm working on right now. Some like Olissipo, Conistorgis and Numantia were easy to find. Others I can copy from EB (Tyde, Pallantia, etc...). Others I came up with by looking at the history of modern settlements (Évora -> Ebora, Porto -> Cale, Bragança -> Brigantion), but there's still alot I can't find.

    Thanks for any info.

PM the EB members for any use of material.

Also, I believe the names are not generated, but talk to an EB member for all your answers. I'm just a little pawn who knows nothing.
