Someone (I think it was MAA) said a while ago, that the factions have a tendency to expand Northwards, and then spiral around.

Never noticed the spiral. Only the N expansion. Thanks I might try the Victory Conditions minimod, though I need to clean up my harddisc soon before I install much more.

when i was makedonia i found that the romans expanded in my direction along the illyrian coast while when i was carthage they would expand down sicily towards me. i think the AI expands in your direction from my experience
The AI expands into the direction of the player. The main target for the AI is the human opponent. This is hardcoded feature of RTW.

...what is that?
anyhow, the barbaroi are actually very easy to bottle up if you're sweboz/keltoi. Just take the transalpine settlements and place forts in the mountains NEAR the passes. Stock up crazy on slingers (or baltic archers) and pelt them when they siege your fort. You'll be slinging lead downhill, watch them barbaroi die!
