Unhappy Victoria: What the heck have I gotten myself into?

So, I just got a copy of Victoria and it's expansion off Gamersgate... and I have no idea what to do. Anyone have any tips for playing? Is there a guide somewhere that outlines some of the basics without being written in Latin? And why are there only like 10 playable nations in each scenario? Is modding required to make some of the others playable?

Actually, everyone is playable. Right click on the flag, and it'll bring up a scrollable list of everyone. EVERYONE.

This is a good place to go asking questions and reading AAR's to get a better handle on mechanics.
It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then, the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.

Oh, and for the love of god, do NOT attempt to start a campaign as the UK.

This game is HARD......but fun once you get the hang of it....Played GB and released Canada as a Vassal Country (My country)

Then reloaded and played as Canada....It toke me a few minutes to recall why I had no manpower for my armies...

The only thing that I find unbearable...is why does it have so much that you need to watch and change??

Still, I enjoy it from time-to-time...Made some "Progress" as Canada...but us becoming a Military Superpower is not going to happen

Very good AAR it helped me learn how to play the game. He uses VIP mod, which I recommend.

The game has some sillyness that I find unbearable (mostly the way POPs are holded), and the lack of tutorial makes it quite difficult to understand. As pointed out, there are a lot of tutorial AAR out there on Paradox forum (though reading through hundreds of comments also makes this annoying).

So far, I can't get into the game. It sure looks like a lot of fun once you know how to handle it (and play with VIP), but I just can't be bothered to constantly manage my POPs around in a completely unrealistic way. Hope you'll have more success than me :) (though I'll try it again once I have some free time).

The manual sorta helps. Not nearly enough though, as with most Paradox games....

When someone tells you not to play as the UK, do not play as the UK. Period. They are an absolute nightmare to manage.

This Should help out. You don't need to absorb everything on the first try, so just pick a nice, easy, out of place country (And god help you, a civilised one) and try it out from there. South America is fairly stable. The Netherlands and Belgium have also been recommended before.

Cool store, bro! I want some ham.
    No ham, pepsi.
They make deli slices of frozen pepsi now? Awesome!
You also need to purchase a small freezer for storage of your pepsi.
It runs on batteries. You'll need a few.
Uhh, I guess I won't have pepsi then. Do you have change for a twenty?
You can sift through the penny jar

Damn. Now I want to get it and play as the UK.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.

Victoria is one of my favourite games, so deep.

My advice for a newbie is play as Belgium, nice and small but plenty to do.

I didnt try GB until after about 2 years of playing the game. Just finished a campaign as The German empire, which has been quite interesting as im covering the history of the rise of Germany and imperialism in my Degree at the moment.

Also another good angle is to jump straight in in 1914 and play as germany to to get used how the battle side of it works, at this point you dont really have time to mess about with developing pops etc., its just 'total war'

anything I can do to help, just drop me a line and I will see what I can sort out, I seem to recall I downloaded a very good guide from Paradox forum a while back that was far better than the stuff you get with the game and Viki is very good also.
