I want to use the toggle_fow cheat like always, but it appears that I cannot get into the console. When i press the "~" key nothing happens.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I use the ¬ key (the one to the left of 1). The ~ key has never worked on my computer.

“Give me a place to stand and with a lever I will move the whole world.”
After playing for a week with fow off, it got a bit borring for me. I turned it back on and set up some watch towers which really added to my game experience
Yes, toggle_fow permanent becomes boring after some time. After 20 years the AI has so many stacks that the AI turn might take up to 1/4 hour. But form time to time it is quite funny.
For example when at the beginning of really each turn a single unit leaves the Saka capital and runs for the forest in the East while another Saka unit leaves the forrest and returns to the town. It seems they don't have toiletts in these nomad settlements.
Or hostile stacks passing each other peacefully to go and siege their respective towns.
Or three smaller stacks attacking a bigger one - but one after the other.
Or my favorite: The AI has two stacks (1 and 2) in a row destinated for a town or enemy "A":
A 1 2
Now, 1 moves to 2 and merges, and then the new stacks heads for A but can't reach it this turn because the units of 1 have allready spent half their movement points going in the opposite direction...![]()
Just a heads up. If you play without FOW, do yourself a favour and disable "show AI movement" or whatever it's called. It's enabled as a default, but can be disabled through game options when in campaign map.
Dont hold down shift when you press the ~ key, its known as the ~ key, but it is actually ` by default. so techincally, you press the ` to bring up the console. At least on my keyboard lol...
Heh, I press the "½" or "§"(if you press shift) key. I guess it's different on different contries keyboards ey?
.
I always turn off both FOW and AI movement. FOW feels totally out of place for me in a Total War game. No problem for C&C but it doesn't work here. If I let AI movement on (never did that in EB), I would probably go cook, have dinner, take some air and return just to find the AI turn half finished.

I usually turn it off for a few minutes at the end of each year or so. I then browse around the map while checking the faction statistic graphs and see how each faction is doing. Quite fun. I sometime find myself rooting for certain factions in wars that don't at all effect me (usually the underdog).

I've been playing TW games since Shogun & only ever tried turning off FoW for EB 1.0 & I've only done it a couple of times just to see how the AI factions are progressing.
I periodically send spies out to see whats going on around the known world & use a combo of watchtowers & spies to keep an eye on my own & neighbours territories.
Historically a lot of peoples knowledge of the state of the world consisted mostly of outdated & often at least 3rd party rumors until relatively recently so why should you be able to have up to the minute info on Carthage when you are Bactria in 200BC?
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...
I'm having the same problem, not beeing able to activate the chatscreen. None of the buttons listed in this thread seems to do the trick.
Anny ideas? It's becoming high time for a little Toggle_fow inspection, cause those pesky yellow dudes are about to overrun AS and I really need to give the AS some money.
Thank you, worked like a charm.
I only ever turn off fog of war when I send my diplomat off to the steppe to get trade rights, because otherwise, having never played a nomadic faction myself, I have no idea where the towns are and it become aimless wandering trying to get lucky and hit a town :/
got a similar problem on vista, but none of the solutions i've seen does the trick... guess i'll have to go in preferences once in a while...
I usually turn off fow to keep track of how various factions are progressing. I could do that by simply exchanging trade rights every three seconds, but that doesn't sound like my idea of fun. But yeah, I too find myself occasionally following a war occuring on the other side of the map and actively rooting for one side to win over the other. The only problem is is that the RTW AI tends to be so indecisive that little comes out of these wars and I am left disappointed :(
"You must know, then, that there are two methods of fight, the one by law, the other by force: the first method is that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is therefore necessary for a prince to know well how to use both the beast and the man.

Well, it gave me some success, cause it seems like AS is getting back on their feet again. Can't have those Ptolemaioi running around all of Asia Minor.
Tell you one thing though, the AI in BI.exe is far smarter than RTW, I'm actually loosing battles.
