Introduction of Koinon Hellenon a divided land or a rising power

Hello everyone i recently began to play EB and found it very interesting and fun to play with all segements of history in it.

This would be my first AAR ever i have always tried to roleplay some when playing RTW and stories run through my head. Very interesting to read the other AAR´s in this section of the forum. For heads up im not a great historian but very interested in history and english is not my main language. I have several ideas on the progress of the story but i will start abit light since its my first time. Many parts might not be historical in the AAR and so on. Tips and tricks is always welcome enjoy.

First words...

The cities of Koinon Hellenon was each ruled by a member of its most succesive noble family.
Only in times of war the cities united under one Hegemon.

Hellas was at war on all fronts as Iskanders empire had been divided into many parts each ruled by the successors. Once they where one now Hellas and Macedonia were bitter enemies.

Chapter 1 Fall of Athenai and destruction of Parthenon

It was summer in 269, july to be exactly and the Hiera Nemean Games was at its heights. Damianus had thrown his spear further then any hellen had did in the Olympic games as the news spread to Areus ears. Antigonos Gonatas had sacked Athenai and even worse he had set fire on Akropolis.

Wandering citizens in the ashes of the burnt Parthenon

Areus Agiados Lakedaimonios was currently Hegemon of Hellas as it was in the times of War. The attack itself was unespected as macedonian forces was currently busy fighting off Pyrrhos in the north and plans for an invasion of Rhodos had leaked out. To show gratitude to Rhodos Athenai had sent a large force to their aid leaving the city quite open to a large scale attack.

With most Athenai forces away and the Hiera Nemean games the macedon king had lured the city states into a trap the greeks had been take on their bed. Areus excused himself taking his commanding officers with him to plan a counterattack before whole grecce where lost. He sent his younger brother Eudamidas Eurypontidos Lakedaimonios with a force to the city of Korinthos to face the threat there. This would save him time to organise the army and hopefully let the news reach rhodos and wait for their aid.

Chremonides Aithalidos Attikos ruling man of Athenai noble of birth had been slain in the battle and saw his city burn before his soul traveled to hades. Antigonos set the Akropolis on fire for the insults when pleading to Chremonides to surrender the city when he did not. A pity but Antigonos could not have the city states in his back while restoring the glory of Macedonia. He knew the people of Hellas was to stubborn and proud warriors and this time he needed to make sure that they where bound to his will and that it would be expensive to be his enemy.

He knew that the games where held and Agathokles Rhodios was old and near the grave he spread the false word of invasion of the island. A plan perfect in detail to conquer the greatest city of the states Athenai and make an end of Hellas would surely prove his worth as king.

With Eudamidas force marching against Korinthos Areus sets hope for Rhodian aid from the sea to flank the macedonias. Time is crucial and the hour late.

Chapter 2 Battle at Korinthos

Prolouge

It was early morning you could almost feel the breeze from the sea, Eudamidas walked back and forth in the old temple of Apollo. The only thing he heard in his head was the echo from his brothers words, hold here do not loose this ground until i arrive.

The spartan force had marched quickly and taken the hill close to the temple of Apollo. Even here they could face a large scale force to tire the enemy out while buying themself time for more reinforcements to come, if there would be any one to come. In either way glory would be gained that day by either beating the enemy or die by their swords. If we win here Sparta would control the whole Peloponnesus and be the strongest of the states indeed. If we win here why should we help the athenians get their precious city back, in either way grecce wont be the same after this day.

Eudamidas fixed his eyes at Olympos for a while then at his men when he heard.
- Strategos! Macedonia apporaches.

The battle at Korinthos

The spartan force had a small advantage possesing the small hill if they could lure the macedonia force to attack them, being fewer in numbers might trigger the hunger for victory in the macedonian general. The spartan force line up and prepare for engaement. The macedonia force larger in numbers started to deploy ther phalanxes but not all willingly to attack up the small hill. Eudamidas ordered his archers that hides behind the hill to fire a volley that hits into the macedonian center not far away from their general who see no option but to push forward up the hill.

The macedonian center clashes with the spartan center having to push uphill with the sarissas forces the phalanx to switch to sword which gains an advantage for the sparta warriors who are experts on close combat.

On the right flank downside the hill the macedonias try to hit the spartan force in their rear with a small force of cavalry and infantry. To their supprise a hoplite unit hidding in the long grass almost throws themself at them when caught on sight.

To the left the the battle is fought hardest and the macedonias push hard to try brake it. With the cavalry flanking from behind the spartan left flank is in a dangerous state if they loose it the enemy could climb up the hill and the battle would be over at once.

Eudamidas orders his skirmishers to enage the enemy force at their left in hope that it will not brake. But the situation looks rather hopless and the general doesnt have more men to support his flank. He orders his nearest men to prepare for engagement and charges down the left side of the hill.

As when it seems all hope is out a messenger cries out that Areus is here Eudamidas turns his eyes to the south and smiles when he sees that reinforcements is here. The macedonian general sees the spartan reinforcements and orders his remaining troops to engage the arriving enemey.

The newly arrived force clash with the remaining macedonian force letting the spartans taste the sarissas. Even if the macedonians are fewer in numbers fighting in defensive phalanx formation with sarissas thrusting through enemies its what macedonians do best.

The macedonians fight bravely but tiredness and an overwelming force makes the whole army to eventuallt routs

Areus stands as the glorious winner of the day and the road to Korinthos lies open.

City of Sparte

Thoughts of Akrotatos

Akrotatos Agiados Lakedaimonios spartiates and heir to rule the city of sparte. He saw his father lead the spartan army out of the city heading against Korinthos leaving him behind. He felt as he had been left in shame that he was not worthy to fight along the side of his own father and fellow spartiates. It was his time to gain glory by victory or death but his father had insist that he should stay in Sparte holding its defense.

Akrotatos knew that if the campign would be successful the battle at Korinthos would not be one he could claim glory from only his father and uncle. Perhaps the elders would see Eudamidas as a more fitting leader when Areus takes the boat to the other side of the river styx. I can only hope Eudamidas returns on his shield and hope the gods delay my fathers march for I should and will be the new lord of Sparte and hegemon of Hellas.

I cannot aid the nobles of Athenai they will claim their city back as soon as it is out of macedonian hands. No i will leave the city be and make a threaty with Antigonus and rule the Peloponnese as my own. As it is my birth right so will i claim it and strike down anyone who opposes me Zeus hear me. Akrotatos turned his head to lay eyes a last time at the army marching out of Sparte, why father why did you not let me face the enemy.

The Trophimoi

Doros Aithalidos Attikos son of Chremonides had been sent by his father to sparte along with his brother as students to complete the spartan agoge. As it was times of war Areus as hegemon of the states had sent an invitation to Chremonides to let his sons go through the training. He saw it fitting as Hellas needed more harden men capable of making and understanding the arts of war rather then learning philosophy in athenai. Chremonides had accepted the invitation as they were rare and saw a chance to bound closer with Sparte.

Doros had just entered the paidiskoi being included in the army reserve of Sparte. He had manage the education rather well but no more then an average student. The news of his fathers death and the sacking of Athenai was horrible to hear but Doros got more confused and angered why the spartan army didnt move directly on the city but against Korinthos. He pledged to Areaus to join him in the battle but Doros was not aligeble to join the spartan army only its reserves as he was in the paidiskoi. Areus told him to stay put in the city and do his duty and end his education.

Doros knew Korinthos was the entrance to the Peloponnese and if Sparte controlls the city they control the whole island. Why should they move against his home city then. To once more compete and rival with the Atenians, no that wont happen why would they. I must found a way to reach the athenian force that was sent to Rhodos and take back Athenai myself and rally the greeks and force the macedonias to end this war. We cannot give our trust and hopes to the spartans but we must solve the matter by ourselfs. As Doros sat deep in his thougths a sharp and loud voice screamed.

-Athenian why do you sit here and dream, your duty is to report to the unit stationed in the southern part of the city.

Doros took his gear and ran off south thinking one day i wont be taking orders from spartan but giving them.

Chapter 4 Hail the polemarch hail the false Basileus

Akrotatos stood along time before his fathers dead body in the temple of the city of Korinthos. His feelings were mixed and thoughts wondered off and on.

- The old man should not have lead his army here what a fool he was to old. But i belive it was the will of the gods my father was not fit to rule anymore. The day has come i am now polemarch, no i am king of the Peleponnese which will now belong to Sparte. The macedonians would not dare to attack us here we are no weaklings as the athenians.

He slowly walked to the city forum to face the nobles to discuss the future of the city. He was dressed in a red and white tunica the colour of blood the colour of Sparte dressed like a king. He went to his seat among his nearest men without saying a word noding politly to the members of the forum. Akrotatos briefly laid his eyes on the greek noble men of Korinthos squabbling in the forum about the future of the city and an alliance between Sparte and Korinthos. He looked back down into the floor and turned to his thoughts again.

- Fools they claim their precious city back without any attempts to bring it to themself, by spartan blood the city was freed from its enemy.

The new spartan lord Akrotatos raised from his seat raised his hand for silence to speak.

- Men of Sparte and citizens of Korinthos my fathers army, my army have driven the macedonians out of the island. By our swords and deaths of spartan men we have taken the city back. Who are not more rightful then me to claim this city when you (Akrotatos points at the Korinthian noblemen) have done nothing to free it.

Akrotatos speaks to the crowd in the forum

The noblemen rose out of their seats shouting out and pointing at Akrotatos.

- This city do not belong to Sparte!

- Barbarian

- Tyrant

The new lord of Sparte shouted with a large voice and more anger in it.

- Silence you fools, this is not an offer these are my final words as Basileus of Sparte pledge your allegiance or face hades.

Akrotatos had a played out his final card he claimed the city and whole Peleponnese and named himself to king, he would be more powerful then and spartan lord before him. With Athenai sacked their was noone to rival with him in all of Hellas since all of the remaining citys would never go against him.

The only thing left for him was to kill the two the athenians who had been sent as trophimoi to complete the agoge in Sparte. They most never know his intentions nor reach the shores of Rhodos where their loyal forces lay camped. Akrotatos turned his head to a man standing in the far corner behind him.

- Execute them and burn their bodies.

I just want to give a heads up that im writing this AAR as you were reading an old chronicle that lacks some pages here and there. This way you get the most important and relative parts of the story rather then going to deep which would make the story go one for ever. Hope you enjoy...
