Question Looking for a better anti-virus

    .
Avast's on-access scanner is too invasive and even when turned off overtaxes the system. Besides, you can't totally uninstall that component.

No Kaspersky! Avast has been doing its job perfectly; it's just the way it does that is disturbing. I've seen Kaspersky let stuff through, which Avast caught with closed eyes.

    No Norton! Never...

I want something easy going, customizable, reliable and on top of that free.

Eset Nod has an increasing trend nowadays, what do you think about it if at all?

    Any suggestions?

    TIA

PS: It might be affordable (<= ~ $25 US, one time payment not recurring) if not free.

AVG Free used to be ok. Personally I don't bother with AV programs these days but AVG was always decent. There are loads of other free new ones as well. I seem to remember that Lemur mentioned one in some thread somewhere...

It works well, the only thing that irks me is that the super is capitalised. *shudder*

Superantispyware is the shizzle, as the kids say. I've also paid for and installed ESET NOD32 on my main Windows box, 'cause AVG failed to catch a pretty major threat for me. NOD32 is a bit of a memory hog, but it's good stuff, and now I can browse Russian porn sites all I want without getting drive-by viruses.

Although Norton turned out terrible programs for over a decade, apparently their latest anti-virus/security program is really good. Gret reviews. They re-wrote it from the ground up, so it could be worth a look-see.

    These things are important.

I also bought NOD32 for both my PCs, students get 30% off anyway.

And Lemur is right about Norton being mucho improved, I read the same some time ago.

I suggest you have a look at these two tests as well, the two english PDFs that is.

Is the new Norton pay once? And Eset Nod?

Eset NOD is meant to be the best.

But I get free industry standard symantec anti-virus. It is pretty much what it says on the can. No memory hog or flashy interfaces.

At least with Eset, you buy a license for one or two years, after that you buy again or look for another one I guess.

Is it worth installing Superantispyware if I already have AVG and Ad-Aware?

Yes, absolutely. They protect different aspects of your OS. (And Ad-Aware isn't nearly as effective as Superantispyware.)

I thought Spybot Search and Destroy was the best.

superantispyware actually does sound like spyware, hah.

Spybot S&D is a good one to have, but SUPERantispyware is a nice one as well.

I would run three, in a free environment.

AVG Free, SUPERantispyware and Spybot S&D

Try Avira....its free and I've found it to be great.

There is a nag screen that pops up when you update basically asking you to upgrade (translation: pay) to their premium package but that can be easily remedied with a quick google search.
