Thread: OT - The Napoleonic EB (Sort of)

Default OT - The Napoleonic EB (Sort of)

OK, I'll post here but again, if the mods dislike it they may move it to somewhere else. The reason is that after over 10 years of constant development and actualization by a small team of hardcore grognards and historical gamers it is finally nearing completion. Given the fact that EB players tend to value realism, accuracy and general depth in their games, then this is surely for them even if they never played a gunpowder age game before. For that's their best chance to get hopelessly addicted to the period:

    http://www.histwar.com/

Histwar is a strategic and tactical computer game that allows you to put on the cocked hat of a Napoleonic army commander and lead troops across many of the most famous battlefields of the early 19th century. Tens of thousands of 3D soldiers organized into regiments and corps will be waiting to carry out your orders in real time.

Currently being developed, soon published by BATTLEFRONT, Histwar: Les Grognards is a tactical wargame that will allow you to re-fight Napoleonic battles between French, Russian, and Austrian forces along with allies from Wurttemberg, Saxony, Poland, Italy, and Naples. Les Grognards will ship with a dozen major battles (including Austerlitz, Eylau, Friedland, Wagram, Borodino). It will also include two editors for creating your own maps and Orders of Battle. Players will be able to square-off with human opponents in two modes: Multiplayer or Play-by-Email (PBEM).

Play as Napoleon and lead the Grande Armée to glory and empire, or take command of the Coalition forces and try to block his path.

Oh and this not shameless advertising ! I'm not part of the team.

Looks great! I really hope this game serves as the kick in the pants CA needs to stop trying to cash in with subpar games and forgotten promises.

Well, two questions: What is a grognard, and where's Prussia?

Default Re: OT - The Napoleonic EB (Sort of)

To answer your questions, a "grognard" is:

Grognard is French for "grumbler".[1] It is not necessarily pejorative and is sometimes used as a compliment. Historically it meant a soldier in Napoleon's army, particularly a member of the Old Guard.[2]

"Grognard" came to mean a veteran wargamer in the early 1970s.[3] It was first used by John Young, at that time an employee of SPI, and subsequently popularised by Strategy & Tactics magazine.

From wargaming, the term moved to role-playing games where it was used to mean someone who preferred older-than-current editions of a game (for example, a person who stayed with first edition Dungeons & Dragons even after the second or third editions were released).

Nowadays, in colloquial usage, it refers to someone who has been involved in a hobby or pastime for a long period, particularly those involved in earlier phases of a now-popular hobby. It is still most often used with reference to wargames or role-playing games. It is primarily used as a pejorative term for gamers who refuse to try newer versions of a game, which they often see as an unwelcome rehash of the old game.

Third, that's a question which is best answered in their own forums. In my experience, everything from the order of battle to the specific command and individual unit intricacies shows variations between factions to represent their differences and strive for historical accuracy (they're not just carbon copies of one and another unlike in ETW), so I would not be surprised that such factions are absent due to the lack of time to implement them satisfactorily.

I guess he asked it, because it seems the developers left it out, not because he didn't know where it is. Or I missunderstood something.

    1. "Histwar"? "Let's make HistWar"? Silly name, tbh.
    2. Wherefore art thou, o Prussia?
    3. Graphics... Not that hot. Too dim lighting in sc's I checked, for one.

However, it's always good to have independent (?) games being published. If it's even anywhere near-ish to E:TW for half the price, say, CA's gonna have to make better games, to the benefit of all.

Well the graphics are not the forte, but given it's a niche game, it's not a problem at all. Command complexity is much higher than in ETW, where you just move around men like toys - Realistic factors such as visibility and rain might hamper musket and artillery fire, and the level of micromanagement is also decisively cut since your orders are issued more broadly with a set of specific parameters, like "should heavy cavalry pursue routers or not?", which dispenses with the need of having to order units, and do so individually to boot since RTW units tend to always go for the wrong unit in the wrong place when I group attack with them.

That and a number of other features, including a message delay which simulates the time that it would take to runners and gallopers to issue orders to all troops.

    10 years and no prussia

but it could become quite an amazing game if you can eventually insert the sweadish and the polish commonwealth and the ottoman empire and ofc the zwei reich wich could make the game expandable from 1620 (??) till 1850(?) wich ofc one could simulate the great slavic liberation (or the turkish russian wars both in the balkans and the caucasus) the sweadish against the slavs (poland and russia ) the 7 years war (you would need to include the danish i believe)

alot of potencial but making a napoleonic game and not including the prussians if folly for a strategy game but i´m sure it will be a great tactical game and as people mentioned might make ca tremble a bit to make them work a bit harder on that stupid ai both on the strategy map the diplomatic fields and the batle map

I presume that they have left out Britain and Prussia, due to the historic french inferioty complex. They want to make it easy for these young napoleons to win!

Well, I've been reading War and Peace which was set at the same time as this game, and in the book it states that apparently Prussia was 'famed for its neutrality'. So, maybe thats the reason.

Of the seven coalitions formed against the Revolutionary France and/or Napoleon, the Prussians took part in four (the first, fourth, sixth and seventh), I believe.

    Never mind,then.

By the way when A Terribly Harmful Name said that this game is the Napolenonic EB, does that mean it hass sort of same interface. Meaning, is there a campaign or does it just let you recreate battles from that period?

i think it´s only batles but considering that ca artificial inteligence in batles is lacking alot in inteligence it could be a good start for them to improve their artificial inteligence

thus allowing for a rtw:2 and maybe just maybe an even greater playability then we currently have in eb (if we consider that eb2 is running in mtw2 it won´t be perfect just an improvement that could benefit greatly from alot of improvements)

the engine is the core of any game and the ai is what makes it either a true challange or just a sickening game (sick as in boring) this new game might give ca a run for their cash and forçe them to improve their game thus long live the competition and capitalism \o

they got the engine they should also have the ai (in all fields not just the batlefield)

BTW Moonburn, I dont think R2TW is going to happen. CA has already announced Napoleonic:Total War; so if you really want to see R2TW, I think you'll be in for a long wait.

Saw the announcement at Gamespot, if anyones interested :http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/n...result;title;0

thanks mallios and perhaps this is even better since the game we´re currently discussing does go into a direct competition with ca wich means they will have to work a bit harder, thus more competition thus better products instead of just more sparkles in the produtcs (graphics and stuff)

Why not make Napoleon an expansion and go on to make a revamped RTW? Hmm...

Sounds like another money-grubbing scheme by CA.

I agree - I also expected they would make an expansion to Empire, but a whole new game?!?! I have a strange feeling about this....

Somehow I don't think this HistWar would make serious competition for CA very soon. It doesn't have overdriven graphics (which we must admit is what the majority of gamers jumps opun first nowadays.) and isn't part of a "famours" series.

Althought it does sound promising with it's new ideas and that it doesn't seem to requiere an uberstrong comp to run on.

But they trully cared only during the 6th and 7th ones. Prussia almost allied with France during the revolutionary wars.

True. I'm probably just going to ignore this game when it comes out; seems like a waste of money to me
