Post My Unprofessional Investigation of Wildlife Trade (w pics!)

Well, finally, I got enough curiousity (as well as time to spare) to see what did they (the illegal poachers) do, and when I back to Bandung, I decide to search for the "Mysterious Animal (Black) Market" in somewhat remote village near Bandung, that some traders in my hometown said about. Well, and I did manage to take my own camera to share these pics for all the orgah here....

Guys... bet if u don't see these... you won't believe what conditions that these animals suffer... In my opinion... they are still better if they end their life on a fry pan for food rather than packed and tortured in really filthy condition...

Open this first: before you open second spoiler!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
For a starter.... and some light jokes before you see a really disgusting (especially for animal - lovers here) photos.... I just give a simple fact that not all animals are suffering here....

Well, forgive me for this pics... but now, let me give someexplanation about the second spoiler!

    1) All this pics are my photos, and as u can bet, I was really unprofessional and I did made a lot of blurred and distorted photos... so please forgive me if these photos aren't in good quality, and I did resize them so I can upload them quicker...
    2) Maybe I got misidentification for some animals (well, I think I better in recognizing RTW, FATW, EB, CNC, Starcraft, and any game troops than animals), so any correction is well received.
    3) Finally, these photos are mine, but if u want to made a good usage of them, feel free to save as and use them... anywhere. As a given info, these pics are taken yesterday, and some pics about the roadside market is today (24 and 25 august).
    4) For Mods... If some of my pics aren't qualified for these forum.... (grotesque) eng... I request a permission to shown them... at least for some days....

COULD BE A DISTURBING PICS FOR MOST OF YOU!... SEE THE FIRST SPOILER FIRST FOR MORE DETAILS!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    And here it is!

A bird in a cage... normal? Well, according to wikipedia, these birds are Gracula religiosa and they are protected in most country... well, they are actually a rather popular bird for rich men here, because they could imitate human speech... but here, they are sold only at Rp 250000 (about 25 dollars)

I didn't know if a crane is portected or not... but well, it was kept in a rather big cage....

Some snake anyone....? Wanna some snake? Well, at least I didn't know.... which snake is endangered.... but at least I know that they are poisonous cobra...

They are Wau - Wau.... a rare primates that is near extinction.... really exspensive.... when I want to photo them.... their traders said that one of them is Rp 2000000 each (200 Dollars) for a small one..... but they could be tamed rather easily..... well actually I couldn't said which monkey is which species.. so forgive me if I couldn't differ a common monkey for a near extinct one...

Well, this monkey is somehat a little different in its fur...

In another cage... lies another monkey...

I believe wild boars aren't protected... but This Dead boar pose... reminding me with Aedui symbol...

When a peacock get its tail a bad shape... It only waits some days before it was turned into a fried bird, because it won't have any worth...... Actually this peacock was priced Rp 100000 (10 Dollars)....

With better condition, they add one zero.... Rp 1000000 (100 Dollars)!

Some eagle maybe..... but they are bigger this time.... and more exspensive too (but I didn't told about their price)

And when I read about USA's eagle feather law.... Here I got a free eagle feather because it was a "just trash" here....... And to give a good usage.... I decide to made this feather into a pen...

And a big orang utan seen inside a building....

Guys.... take a bus ride and seeing some animals kept in stinky (literally) conditions made me really exhausted.... so today, I just took some photos on their "popular" roadside trade site....

Hope you could learn.... from where your exspensive pet has come.....

Think the first snake was a mangrove snake?

    Poisonous but not a cobra.

Wow. Sometimes, the .org is the finest place on the internet. Our own private correspondent in Bandung. Thanks for that, Cute Wolf. I am fascinated by your pics and account.

You could join animal protection groups, if at all interested.

I must confess to having owned this bird when I was a wee lad. Had it in our volière. They are cute, with a beautiful voice. They will even imitate your sounds. Great bird.
They are rare, but not at all uncommon to keep.

Times have changed. One should not keep birds like this in a cage, I think. Except in a zoo. Although I predict times will change again, and the entire genetic stock of many exotic birds like this will be of captive birds. Which argues for keeping them in captivity.
Also, the difference between a zoo and a nature reserve is shrinking. Pity. There is little real wilderness left anymore. Before our eyes, in your pictures, we see it dissapear.

Indonesia is an ecological superpower. Nations go from underdeveloped, to developing, to developed. Which corresponds roughly with a balanced and sustainable ecological policy. To plunder. To post-materialistic and (somewhat) environmentally friendly again.
Let's hope Indonesia completes the transformation to post-materialistic society before it has destroyed its ecological wealth. Currently it has the disinterest in ecological matters combined with the power to destroy at will that is so typical of the intermediate stage.

Ok, but I still didn't want to join any animal protection groups, as I still want to eat some dogs and cats.... but at least this little journey really changes my mind about animal trade...

DO IT YOURSELF!!! YOU ARE THE BEST BET FOR REPORTING THIS!!! Why must you insist that WE do it for you? And don't just send the information to one place like the WWF, send it to other conservation groups like Sea Shepard, Jane Goodall, just anybody. Eventually someone will see it.

Louis VI the Fat - Good points about Indonesia, it's sad about what's happening to their environment and the animals that live within it (as seen by the pics )

I still want to eat some dogs and cats
Why? Dogs are the most loyal creatures on earth to humans?? More loyal than 99.9% of humans as a matter of fact! And don't even get me started with cats, I love those critters to death (my own is passed out right next to me ).

Nah.... report to what? Everyday police are seeing that market and THEY DO NOTHING!

    EDIT:
Maybe you refer to WWF... welll I report to WWF indonesia... but it looks like they tought... oh.... just another spamming guys....

    EDIT AGAIN:
And Decker if you refer to my habits of eating dogs and cats... well, most animal protection / conservation organizations endorse vegetarianism... and I enjoy eating dogs and cats for a delicacy's sake..... bet what will they done to me when they saw dog meats in my fridge....

But I do have smpathy for these "protected animals" because WE need to conserve them for our offsprings and the balance of nature..... Seeing them "jailed" in small cages with their food mixed with their **** (literally : FECAL MATTERS!!!), made me sick... if they want to trade them, they should do a better method of keeping...

    Lastest report....

It looks like they are now ceased because the recent earthquakes razed that place to the ground..... At least, the animals are now (mostly, if not dead....) free again in the jungle... even if that jungle aren't their native home..... Well, it looks like Nature itself did better job than WWF.

The rich and ignorant. Even then, there are plenty of regular people who have exotic birds caged up in their homes. Most likely, they come from way-stations like these.

Cool store, bro! I want some ham.
    No ham, pepsi.
They make deli slices of frozen pepsi now? Awesome!
You also need to purchase a small freezer for storage of your pepsi.
It runs on batteries. You'll need a few.
Uhh, I guess I won't have pepsi then. Do you have change for a twenty?

I email them 5 or 6 times, with my photos attached, but they made no respones, but now, there was no need for action, as that place was really razed to the ground, hey, who will trade wild animals when they didn't have anything but ruins? Recent earthquakes did the job really bad, even I got frightened when my room get a little crack, but fortunely, I'm still safe here.

Do as you wish pal, but that makes no difference now......

That village are allready emptied because recent earthquakes, that's why I update this long sleeping thread..... well, bet that those orang - utans are allready set free by nature now, as they are now free roaming west java's thick forest.

    =========================================

And everyone who want to buy a pet monkey...........
I just found that you could obtain any Monkey LEGALLY here, except Orangutans, so if they want to really obey the law, they could just sell Tarsius, Lemurs, Proboscis-Monkeys, and Wau-Waus.... as they are at the break of extinction, but there was still no law regulating them domestically here.
    *) But:
1- You must obtain that monkey all by yourself in the jungle. And made some evidence that you really got them by yourself (means: no Trade!)
2- You mustn't have, or used any fire/gun-like arms, that means that you can legally obtain them by arrows or nets, but NOT airguns. The best way to prove you get them yourself is capturing them by hand.
3- You must agree to give it acess for reproduction (meaning, you have to capture both male and female.... or you did know someone who has that monkey type with opposite genders, so they can copulate).
4- You must be at least a quarter Natives here......

Well, actually, Tarsius and Lemurs are still sold in open market here....... Maybe next time I get enough money, I'll buy a small Lemurs and show it.....
Ehem, Lemur.... don't kill me.... I really means a true Lemur.....

EDIT: I just found out that Lemurs aren't protected species here....... there was many of them in the forest near here... so, about a week or two from now, I'll buy it.

I would advise against it unless you plan on giving them to a conservation group or a zoo for care and release back into the wild but if not... then don't bother.

You're not just saying this to impress the "uncultured" masses are you? I'm a Jakarta born and I know sometimes they aren't necessarily cute like the ones on Animal Planet but don't you think they're a bit too wild for urban standards? I mean you are completely okay eating something that dumpster-dives?

    @Decker
It was originally a law to preserve some of our culture, that some traditional entertainer called "topeng monyet" (literal: Masked Monkey; A type of traditional entertainment that shows dancing, playing music, and silly actions by monkey). And about a quarter native, I'm sure that most of yours, except some Indonesian born such as Weebeast, can't obtain any kind of monkey. At least you must show that you are born here.... and about the reproductive means... that was a small addition in, because international Pressures.

    @Weebeast
Well, if you are really Indonesian born, you'll see most animal (including goats and chickens) are feed with dumps. Literally, I bet you allready know that the traditional market's trashes is goes to goat and cow farm for food, that was a common secret here. Eating dogs and cats, for non muslims, are just the very same of that. Indeed, there are some dedicated dog "farm" (NOTE: NOT KENNELS) that provide high quality dog meat for upper-classes consumption.

And I'm not sure about monkeys but I know people here can and do obtain lions, tigers, and bears (Oh my!). They just need a permit and most house them in shi...terrible cages, holding pens, and the like while their wild brethren are getting killed off or pushed into shrinking habitats and we have thousands in private captivity. (Not to mention the idiots who like to dabble in fantasy and breed the enormous and unhealthy "Ligers" ).

Well, if you are really Indonesian born, you'll see most animal (including goats and chickens) are feed with dumps. No I didn't know. I had few chicken and chicks as well as pet and we fed 'em corn. I thought dog eating was only for easterners like Ambonese for example and definitely not upper-class? I'm just a city boy after all. I honestly never seen people serve dog meat out in the open (restaurants). What I've seen is people just kidnap suspected ownerless dogs and cook 'em. I guess I gotta travel moar. Indonesia, at least Java, is an agricultural powerhouse. People feed garbarge to livestocks is horrible. I'm sure there's nutrition in garbage for the animals but still the extra stuff that comes with it doesn't sound so appetizing. Good to hear people try to put good quality of dog meat on table though. That took me by surprise.

Bandung, 108 km's south of Jakarta, Capital of the West Java Province. That "animal trade" site was Tasikmalaya. Just a bit off more.

Well, actually, Chineese and Bataks also eat dogs here (I'm Chineese descendant). And about those garbage eating animals, don't worry, at least they are passed through their own metabolic system of course.

That doesn't always mean they are healthy. It could be the same as saying fast food just passes through the body without doing an harmful effects.

Did anyone really report that? Well, I decided not to buy a pet lemur, because of their "low" stock, so their price are really high these day (quadruple rise!)..... And if that report was sucessfully attract WWF, then, I should start to stop eating dogs and try to keep one as pet then..... not foodstock because soon, eating them would be a crime..... ahhahahhahaaaa.....

Well, now seriously, I really appreciate if someone really does the report....
