Default Wildlife Trade? Allright, I want to bought a cute eagle chick and orangutan baby....

Seriously, I just don't believe when I first see...
Yesterday, I just got back to my hometown in central Java... and then I get bored at home, and go to walk, seeing local "animal market". And what did I found is a really rare, and bizzare things happened, too bad, I forgot to carry my camera.

Well, what I say maybe offend someone who devote themself in wildlife protection, but I saw some group of merchants selling Orangutans, Eagles, Wolves, Ravens and many more "rare animals". Heck, I know there was a rumours that they sold their "forbidden" things "nomadically", sold in city after city in Java... but I never tought that I'll saw them firsthand until yesterday!

So I ask about what price of a cute eagle chick and a little orangutan baby.... well, really shocking if u know...

The eagle chick was sold at Rp 300000 (about 30 dollars), and orangutan baby was sold at Rp 750000 (about 75 dollars)... what the...... and I just tought to attempt bought a nice little eagle chick, and then, I remember, in my home city, this was my parent's home, and they didn't like if I bought animals at home because it is noisy..... Well, then I ask them, when they'll go to Bandung... and they said somewhere about next month (actually, 5 or 6 weeks after), at front of BIP (A local streetside pet trade site).

It was very tempting to bought a cheap, nice and cute "endangered" animals u know.... but half of my conciousness said that "that's wrong!" and thanks to my parent's restriction when it comes to "noisy pets", I cannot bought them here...

But maybe I want to bought them when I was back in Bandung..... and I need fellow orgah's opinion about having an endangered pets, actually, the price of them is soo low, and that Persian Cats or Certified Dogs was much more exspensive... Or in case of "well there was a serious criminal", maybe you could contact Some kind of animal wildlife foundation......... but really, here, we didn't have a good laws on wildlife trade except "cosmetic one"...

Seriously, half of mine want to bought a cute little eagle, but half of mine is feeling guilty...

It's not a question of guilty - it's a question of not supporting a trade which is fast removing these 'cute' species from the planet. If you really like these animals, help preserve their environments.

Wow, doesn't sound very legal. I hope they're not selling something truly endangered. There are many types of eagles and selling "bald" eagles here is a no no. I understand the appeal but it also leads "wild cats" eating sheep in the UK and snakes eating alligators in Florida.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.

The simple fact is that every person who buys one of those endangered animals just brings it one step closer to extinction.

More than one step. Orang Utan babies are only got from the wild by killing their mothers, and probably other tribe members.

Depends of the laws on your country and if they are enforced or not, if you buy them its wrong because as mentioned your supporting the illegal commerce of such species.

But understand the temptation of buying them, if I find myself in your situation I probably would buy the lot, at least to contact a wildlife conservation organization afterwards to take care of the animals and the jerks selling them.

wow man that is pretty crazy. something that open in America.... Well i cant even imagine it.

It would be sort of cool to own a pet eagle. i could train it to kill and then return to my wrist........... Hey if i give you the money will you buy me one....

Oh and it probably isn't a bald eagle, there are other endangered eagles in southeast asia.

The orangutan i would definitely not touch. no plausible deniability there everyone knows about orangutans and their rarity. Oh and they are very dangerous.

One final thing the owrst part is they would probably live longer with someone like you who doesn't even know that much about them (i assume of course) than the scum who will probably kill it if he can't sell it. I dont think you should buy any though

Well, those eagle, I check in wikipedia and some other internet resource.... they are endangered Javanese Eagle...... And about orang utans, I think for a while that they are really cruel to be sold..... Oh yeah..... I'll think someone must contact WWF for quickly bought most of these endangered species before they are sold to some "unskilled pet owners". Thanks.

*)NB: well, maybe I bought a wolf cub instead..... At least they are not endangered (Wolf are pests here)

Oranutans are mostly solitary. I think they live like Tigers and crocodiles. 1 male and several females all share a territory.

We have a saying here, "A puppy is for life, not just for Christmas".

Just because the Eagle chick is "cute", when it is full grown it will be a killing machine, and you'll either have to take responsibility for it by training it, or watch claw someone's eyes out; or worse.

Similarly with the Orangutan, full grown is perctly capable of killing an adult human male if provoked.

Wolves dont make good pets. They are feral by nature, no matter the training you give em. One day, thay are all lovey dovey, the next, they eat your freakin hand.

Is this legal in Indonesia, Cute Wolf? I would suggest you tip the authorities if not. This seems like the sort of thing that is born out of questionable intent.

Eagles and orang Utans aren't legal... they are endangered anyway, that's why someone contact WWF or any wildlife lovers to buy them and relase them back to their natural habitat (PS: Don't jail those traders, they are just poor people need some money quick, too pitiful to be jailed without getting their children out of school).

And Wolf.... they are pests anyway and that's more than legal to shot them on the sight....

Well, you can train wolves, but they are dangerous. Much more likely to kill someone else, rather than you, though.

Imho, yes they may be poor, struggling, blah blah blah. But what they are doing is illegal and also helping in killing animals/species of this planet by selling those animals, and they probably know this to some degree. Instead, contact the WWF yourself or even your own government's agency that deals with this type of action(s) and go from there since you experienced it yourself and no one here has (at least to my knowledge). The idea of owning a "rare" or endangered species should have never arisen in you to even think about buying these creatures unless you yourself plan to help re-release them back into the wild with help from people who know how to do it. I also don't agree with the suggestions on buying wolves or other such creatures that are naturally wild. I think you'll feel a whole lot better Cute Wolf, if you help free those animals.
You should also contact the WWF office in the town/city that you're at as well since there is a chance to get some better evidence.
    I also PM'd you.

Once knew a man who trained a wolf for breeding with dogs. He was later killed by the wolf, and one of his clients was injured by a half-wolf.

I knew a guy who owned a Arctic Wolf, beautiful creature, but there was just something about her... had that look in it's eye, that it would kill you without hesitation if you did something it didn't like.

I really do not see the fascination with keeping naturally wild animals?? The only ones that I can see are the domesticated kind which have interacted with humans for a long long time. The idea of wild animals in captivity such as zoo's is something I was never fond of. Just take a look, the whale and dolphin tanks are abysmal, I won't even go there with hippos, and the big cats and Elephants need territory that is huge and allows for roaming and some kind of hunting. But I'd say only a very few select zoo's should be allowed to educate the public into protecting these species in their habitats and how to act accordingly if having contact with them in the wild. The only thing that they were good for beyond the education is the rehab of the injured animals. But other than that, I've never agreed with zoos for the most part.

As for the people who purchase big cats for their own personal what ever. It's unbelievable that that is even allowed! The cages are absurd and pathetic! A constant problem I find, or an underlying tone if you call it that. Is this superiority complex it seems we have against the other inhabitants of this planet. It can be seen by the way we treat them, on the "animal attack shows" ect..

Good man. Better for the apes and better for you, these are not pets they are wild animals, and they are extremely dangerous. The old man of the woods isn't as dangerous as a chimp, but they will tear you apart if you anger/scare them.

Don't forget they probably receive many of those a day. If it's something you truly care about, there's no substitute for speaking to someone in person (phone call).

Agreed, calling them as well will help a lot. Just don't hesitate about it.
