Sounds like an exploit to me, and apparently, it is possible that you will not be able to do that in EBII because of the frequent desertions of captain-led armies in M2TW.

Yes, desertion. In M2TW armies led by captains will suddenly decide to leave their well paid posts and join the enemy after just a couple of turns. Makes no sense at all, but hey, this is the creative assembly we are talking about.

I haven't played M2TW, but I believed that desertion is the same as in crusades in MTW - number of men in units slightly decreases during march. That would be quite reasonable for captain lead armies.

Also, if your faction leader has low "Authority" than Captains and Generals with low loyalty will defect to the rebels. It seems too common in M2TW vanilla, but it can be tweaked with proper work in the traits.

This only happens when you have a FM join a Crusade - there is a certain probability that your FM led army will have some desertions if he ends the turn further away from the target city than at the beginning of the turn. This caused me problems when the path-finding on the campaign map gets a little confused

It does happen outside of crusades as well, sometimes stacks led by captains or unloyal family members will revolt to the rebels. It always seemed to happen more when they were futher away from cities as well.
