Another problem with Roman names...

Heya. I'm trying to alter the traits of one of my characters for roleplaying/AAR purposes. The problem is, his name doesn't seem to register with the console. I know the way Roman names work in the console, but this isn't working for me.

I have two characters (father and son) named Caivs Avrelivs Cotta. I enter this into the console:

character_reset "Caivs Romanvs"

It successfully resets the turn of the father only. For the son, I enter this into the console:

character_reset "CaivsA Romanvs"
CaivsB Romanvs
...
...
...
All the way up to "CaivsK Romanvs"

No luck. The character is not recognized with any of them.

The same goes for a few other characters who don't even share the exact same name as others. There is even a character whom I was able to enter into the console before that it won't recognize anymore. Am I doing something wrong? Is there even more to the system for Roman names I'm unaware of?

If two characters have the same internal name, the cheats will only work for one of the them until the other is dead. There is a chance that the guy you want to move shares the same internal name with another character (who may even have a different visible name).

I've had this same problem and it seems that only Romans are affected. The internal names of characters change to their displayed names. For example, I trained a diplomat, "KaesoD Romanvs", and occasionally used character_reset on him. Worked fine until the next day, I load my save, a few turns later type character_reset "KaesoD Romanvs" and he doesn't exist anymore. I try all the other names, none of them work, except Kaeso which resets a family member back in Italy. I got the FM killed in battle just to see what would happen, and "Kaeso Romanvs" worked on the diplomat I know was called KaesoD just 15 turns ago.

Edit: I just realized that I don't actually remember whether I first noticed this before or after I started playing EB with BI

Maybe that's the problem... Another thing I noticed is that characters that have earned nicknames such as Africanvs or Macedonicvs pass them down to all their male descendants (or am I supposed to have a dozen FMs called Asiaticvs 50 years down the line).

Most of the time this problem would be obvious. If you were playing Makedonia and had two guys named "Demetrios Argeades" you wouldn't be surprised that the game only sees one of them. Since the Roman names are hidden, you don't know if this is going to happen before you test them.

Roman honorary names are passed down to children. This is how it was historically (generally) and how it is supposed to work in the game.

Do their honourary names make up part of their internal name ever? ie. Does Mr KaseoD ever become KaseoD Afrikanvs or something like that?

Most of the time this problem doesn't exist, it's just the Romans. When I play Baktria, for example, DiodotosB stays DiodotosB after I reload the campaign later. The more I think about this, though, the more I'm convinced that this is some strange feature of BI...

@Blxs: Nope, that's handled by traits, it's just that Mr KaesoD tends to become just Kaeso after reload.

But let's say I have a character with a name nobody else has. Like Kaeso in my current game. In some cases I can type in "Kaeso Romanvs", "KaesoA Romanvs"......"KaesoK Romanvs", all to no effect. Does this mean he is listed under a completelyt different name internally (like, say, "SpvrivsJ Romanvs") even though his outer name is Kaeso?

No, I looked at names.txt and only Kaeso, KaesoA... KaesoK are displayed as Kaeso.

I wonder why some of my guys just don't exist on the console. It's just like those Romans to pull a stunt like this...

When you are trying to get that guy to react to a trait do other guys with the name Kaeso happen to react? If so, there is a chance that the guy you want has a name like lets say KaesoF Romanvs and the guy that reacted to that name also shares the internal name KaesoF Romanvs. If there are two guys with the same internal name, the codes will only work for one of them. It seems that there is a small chance that exiting out of the game and restarting it will cause the game to change which one it recognizes. Although, most likely you will have to either not use codes on the guy that isn't recognized or kill off the other guy to get there to be only on.
