Thread: Do you Tweet?

  1. #1

    Question Do you Tweet?

Do you use Twitter? If yes... why?

I can see the point in blogs, but why would you want to update your friends and family about the fact you just farted or that you just removed some navel fluff ?

I for one do have an account, but gave up after 3 senseless messages...

I refuse to participate simply because of all the media (even news agencies) babbling on about Twitter. I'll stick with Facebook, as it seems to me to be less obnoxious than the other social sites I'm familiar with though the proliferation of their games and quizes that show up on the news feed are getting rather tiresome. They really need an option to shut them off from the news feed.

I've never been a fan of fads and Twitter just seems to be the latest.

    Nope, not me.

    Why?

    Well because...

Same goes for facebook to a lesser extent. Yes, I like to look at other people's pages when they actually have something to tell, but most of the time I get annoyed by those people who update what they are doing a zillion times a day.

"X had a good nights' rest."

"X enjoyed his morning coffee and breakfeast."

"X thinks he has so much work to do."

"X can't get his work done."

"X is glad it's finally time to go home".

"X has enjoyed a good meal."

"X is now going to watch [insert crappy televion show or movie]."

"X has been beaten up by Andres because he couldn't think of a satisfactory answer to the question "don't you have anything better to do???""

I guess what annoys me the most about fb is exactly what this twitter stuff is about?

    Argh...

Yes, I agree Andres. The mundane stuff is pointless and annoying, but I do find enough gems on FB to offset the "is bored. txt me" stuff. It is the countless games (foodfights, mafia wars, farmville, etc) and quizes ("Which dead rock star are you?") that drive me crazy. I found out how to turn off an individual game/quiz but they are like the hydra - shut off one and two more replace it.

I made a Twitter account a few months ago, but have never used it. Facebook does well enough for me. The way I see it, Twitter's more for quasi-famous people and above. Otherwise, the question above is raised: Who cares/why?

    Twitter is for old people.

    *dismissive arm gesture*

On the entire intranets, is there anything less cool than to tweet?

To today's kids, Twitter's got the coolness factor of your parent arriving home too early, just when your party got going, your father putting on a - jeez! - compact disc, of Vanilla Ice's 'Ice Ice Baby', and both making some spastic movements in the middle of the room that probably passed for dancing twenty years ago and shouting 'hey you kids, join in, is Ice l33t or what?'

Heck no! Even if I did embrace vile institutions such as Facebook and MySpace, I would still refrain from tweeting. The word limit is what kills me. I am an exceptionally verbose person, and usually anything I write is thrice the recommended length. I hate myself for not being able to summarise, and it is no surprise I loathe Twitter. Loathe, but not hate.

And yes, Fragony, I am in the same situation. Mobile phones are enough pain for me. And lastly, as several people already pointed out - no one cares (except some pervert paedophiles sitting in a basement, performing unmentionable acts in front of the computer screen...)

    Twitter is the new myspace.

    I hate myspace.

I do feel sorry for one of my friends. His uni course requires him to create and use a twitter account.

Another guy I know has his feeds going to his twitter, which tweets, then that sends it to his facebook.

I removed him and havent looked back.

Speaking about facebook, I got an immense amount of pleasure by culling about 170 people from my 'friends' list.

Three orgahs on there now. 3/50 isnt bad.

Funny you say that, Pevergreen; I just conducted a friend purge on Facebook. Too many people whose names I couldn't immediately relate to a memory. Gone!

I don't understand Twitter. Then again, I don't understand many successful, popular things, so that's not saying much.

Yup, I missed the boat on custom URLs. Vaguely remember some talk about it coming at some point, and that's about it.

This is one of the true ironies of my existence.

At 30, I am very much a child of the digital age. I grew up playing every major console starting from the Atari 2600 at 5, which was our first console. We still have it. I've had/bought every Sega and Nintendo console within a few months of it's release, all the way up to the Dreamcast and Wii.

At 8, I knew more about our computers than mom and dad. Our first was an Apple IIe that I didn't really think was that great. Our first home PC (dad had a few at work) was a 386 running Windows 2.0 and DOS 5.0. I taught myself how to use them both down to the very least, minute function from the 600 page manuals.

I grew up in that wonderful space of time where I still know and prefer to use a manual can opener, yet have the gumption and wherewithall to tear a PC down to individual parts to fix with complete confidence and nary a shred of fear. I still prefer analog clocks, but couldn't fathom not having a cellphone with me 24/7. Interesting contrasts.

What's my point in all this?

    I hate.

    HATE.

Twitter. Myspace. Facebook. All of these "social whoring" and "popularity contest" sites as I both think of and call them. If my loved ones and friends care enough to know what I'm up to, they call me on the phone to talk for a bit. "txting", "adds", and "tweets" are far too impersonal and not a bit self-important in my view. I'll SMS a friend if I'm bored or I have something to say that's not worth a phone call, but any worthwhile conversation is done voice or in person. Another aspect of this is probably my intense loathing for this rampant narcissism and selfishness in people these days. Everything is about me me me and who looks the best and is the most popular. To an extent we had those things when I was growing up, but it's not nearly as bad as it is now IMO.

Call me old fashioned, but that's my take. I may end up being forced into getting a myspace and/or facebook account for certain reasons down the road, but the other social sites like twitter I'm avoiding like the plague.

    Bah humbug!!!

    /rant over!

I also saw a documentary about toilet paper an article stating that employers nowadays often check such sites and having only party pics on there is just as bad as not having a profile at all for some.

I'm also glad you didn't delete me Lemur, I feel a lot more famous now, my e-self-esteem has fully recovered.

Why would I delete you? In a certain sense, I know you. Keeping a vague connection with you is entirely appropriate.

Whacker, Facebook is only a "popularity contest" if you treat it as such. I prefer to see it as (a) the best way to keep up with feckless friends who change addresses and emails too darn often for me to keep track, (b) a lightweight social checking-in system, and (c) a way to connect with the many ladies in my life who are addicted to it.

It doesn't need to eat your life, it doesn't have to be a whose-status-update-is-bigger contest, it doesn't have to to be a blessed thing that you don't make it.

I used to be completely anti-Twitter, but the Green Revolution in Iran changed my perspective, as did this site, which appears to be the entire reason Twitter was invented. (WARNING: Link contains old man swearing language and is not safe for work or parents.)

I have never tweeted a thing in my life, but I have had ideas for twitter accounts that would be "in-character" thoughts of something other than myself. From what I understand a number of people have already beaten me to such a punch, but I've still not completely ruled doing something like that out.

Now if you like twitter that's cool too. I, however, cannot see me using such a thing(for myself) in my current state. If i ever owned a website then it'd make sense.

I stick with Facebook, mostly to see what my relatives and siblings are up to, whom live across vast swathes of the earth, in a way, it's the only window I have on a few of them. One of those things, I apply to my friends list on facebook is "if I don't know ya, I ain't gonna add ya." Easy as that.

There's nothing elitist about our IRC chan, nor is it a popularity contest. What it IS, is a venue for constantly verbally abusing you and for disco and I to talk smack to each other.

    My dearest prosimian.

My experience with Facebook is that 90% of the people out there treat it as such.

Furthermore, 128% of people using it have picked themes that make my eyes bleed profusely when I view them.

While my loathing for Twitter has not diminished in the slightest, you did mention one of the VERY few actual, legitimate uses of it that I think are/were worthwhile and worth reading.

Are you sure you aren't confusing Facebook with Myspace? Agreed, the backgrounds, sounds, and general layout on Myspace were horrid. I could rarely view a page without getting a headache. One of the nice things about Facebook, on the other hand, is that the layout is constrained and consistent. It's almost Apple-style in how it limits your options. A good thing when allowing every housewife in North America to build her own website.

I think you're just being a crotchety geek, Whacker. Grumpy before your time. Facebook is the least worst social network at this time. That makes it useful. But as I cautioned Mrs. Lemur when she first signed up, "Don't ever mistake this thing for a social life."

I don't twitter, but my friend does. That combined with the internet in general mean I get to read the best of twitter (like that "stuff my dad says" one) without actually having to participate.

As for Facebook, I just use it to stalk people, occasionally.

No, I'm associating the tools with the general idiocy that is inextricably tied to their use... in my experience.

In all seriousness, yes, you are right. It's not as bad as I'm making it out to be, BUT my opinions of each is generally low. Popularity contests and attention whoring have become far too commonplace, and both are problems that the digital age has help accelerate way too much, and these sites are some of the most abused tools of each.
