    Question Latin dictionary

    .
The prof made a few suggestions, but being the language nerd I'm not content with them. Their common drawback is the magic phrase of "elementary". I know a thing or two about learning languages; it happened before, it will happen again: the elementary will get inadequate and we'll be made to get an intermediate stuff and so on. I, OTOH, want to buy once and for all.

    Suggestions?

I always understood Lewis & Short was meant to be one of the best. The wiki article on it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Latin_Dictionary) suggests the Oxford Latin Dictionary is better.

Both may be available at your institution's library rather than purchasing them?

By the way, I came across this interesting article about Latin pronunciation the other day, and thought it might whet your appetite (page 5 in the attached pdf link). It changed my understanding of how to pronounce terms such as "Hastati Samnitici".

    Thanks bro!

Even if the library has one of them, it's likely 2 copies max and I'd rather pay the booksellers than photocopiers.

I would get the ‘elementary’ dictionary first; and just use: online dictionaries.

Scroll down a bit and you see dictionary lookup; you can select the language there. Anyways the Greek one gives you Autenrieth, LSJ, Middle Short, Slater in one package plus links to sources.

I knew you would throw Perseus into the pan, Telle. The unfortunate part with the great online dictionaries is that I can't take them along to the class (no laptop and pro'ly no wireless connection at school).

Anyway, I happened to order The Pocket Oxford Latin Dictionary for the time being, which means I did get an elementary one, which was actually suggested by the prof amongst others.

Thanks for all suggestions and please keep them coming for posterity.

You could always get a *insert language here* to Latin dictionary, or are you trying to learn Latin?
