Thread: Units You Never Use......But Should

Default Units You Never Use......But Should

I have a habit of not using certain units that I probable should. The biggest on is spears/pikes. No matter what faction I play I almost never use them. Yes, it costs me.

So I was wondering what other units people don't use when they know they should.

After some soul searching I came to the conclusion that I actually use all of the unit types. I.e. - Heavy Cav, Light Cav, Heavy Inf, Light Inf. So I suppose I'll just have to name a specific unit. Being a Turk-player, I guess I'll have to say: Futtuwas.

I KNOW that I'm practically blasphemous in this, but almost all my armies are made up of SI, TF, TH, AHC. As high and late come along I go to JHI, JI, SI, AHC, TH, +2 OI and (occasionally) +2 OS. My main concern is early, since TF are less hybrids than pure archers. +2 TF are competent flankers, but not even close to as good as +/- 0 Futtuwa. This is all mysterious. Futtuwa even look damn cool.

    I have no excuse.

Expensive elite swords and axes (eg: CMAA, Swabians, Varangians).

Those guys are utter carnivores against pretty much all infantry, but my own infantry tends to be spears, polearms, and archers/skirmishers, and I invariably use heavy horse as my hammer units.

I guess I just can't get my head around using slow (read: infantry) units as a hammer unit.

But seriously, if I was to hypothetically face my own line-up used by a hypothetical opponent of precisely equal skill, EXCEPT with a couple of heavy swords/axes swapped in for spears/halberdiers, I would probably quite easily route the opposing army (as used by said hypothetical opponent).

    Does that even make sense??

Anyway, short answer as to why: I guess it's just habit.

With the notable exception of Spanish Jinnettes, it's pretty rare for me to employ mounted missile units in significant numbers. (I do make use of Faris and Byzantine Cavalry to some degree, but not extensively.) It's probably a major reason why I've hardly ever played as the Turks -- which is a little ironic, given that they're most people's favorite faction.

for me, it's pretty much any of the siege equipment. i've never been able to break the habit of just using my most expendable units to storm the gates during sieges.

I was thinking about this t'other day, & it struck me that I've never made use of the extensive anti-cavalry cavalry (that looks wrong but I'm sure it's right!) units in Wesmod.

I know they're there, some of them even look pretty & have very nice info pics & such, but in the heat of battle I can barely get my horsies to charge in the right direction, let alone get down to the serious business of matching just the right unit of cavalry against the opposition. Cavalry for me has just two targets: the type that they shouldn't be charging into, & the type that is crushed to a sad red smear beneath their mighty hooves.

The only equivalent to the situation outlined above (the fiddly matching up of the right type of cavalry) is when I've got an uber/jedi princeling.

But then, of course, I just hurl him at everything.

This thread is silly. I'm considering closing it.

Everyone knows camels are the only unit one should use. I never used much of the tactical units on the map.
    Abandon all hope.
