You're just now playing Rome? well, 1st thing i would say is go out and buy medieval 2 gold edition.

    but with rome:

Use the Scipii: They can easily take out carthage, and holding a large island and land from another continent is a big plus

Get EB (Europa Barbarorum) after you beat/get bored with vanilla. it is an amazing mod that is as historical as possible, but is extremely fun and actualy challenging.

    Welcome to the org. Rokondo.

As a brand new player who wants to become the master of the game, some sort of guide are always helpful. Frogbeastegg's Guide on RTW and Smackus Maximus' strategy guide are the best in the business and reading them will make you a pro in no time. And if you have further questions; you can always ask them in the RTW Guides section or in the Colosseum.

All the starting three Roman factions are relatively easy to play as and should help you to get used to the game. Personally I find the Julii to be the easier faction to be play as for beginners - they have weaker enemies (in the early game) compared to the Brutii and Scipii and have a simpler game play (less involvement of navy and other affairs). Even though the Brutii and Scipii are more rewarding in term of trade and temple selections. I'd always recommend the Julii for people yet to be familar with the game. After you complete the campaign you would get tons of faction choices, then that's when the real fun begins.

Like Prussian Iron said, you can download some mods after you get bored with vanila RTW. Some of the mods are very well made and quite awe-inspiring, and offers you another dimension for the game.

RTR I never played, but i tried to isntall it and EB took like a day to get downloaded, installed, and started playing.

its more historically accurate, i can tell you that. very fun, especially that cavalry is only good for charging, and that we have way better factions. my fave is Epirus

Well, maybe I’ll try it when I get bored with rtr.
Pretty good mod though, EB will have to be pretty darn good to compete with it.

    Have the game, Empire also.

But my love goes to Rtw.
It's the time frame that speaks to my imagination in ways no other game could ever do.

I used to play RTR as well. Heres the difference if I remember RTR correctly

    In EB
    -Archers does less damage.
    -Cavalry is slightly weaker
    -Different map
    - Macedonia doesn't always become the Black Death
-You get ethnicity traits (Athenian, Spartan etc) which would help you role play
    - More scripted events (Epeirus- Gallic alliance, Spartan Agoge)
    - Battles lasts longer
    - Much heavier then RTR (In terms of game play. You need a really good comp for EB)
    -Epeirus instead of Ilyria

That is all I can remember. I wouldn't say EB is better then RTR, but its definitely at least equal. I personally prefer EB. Try them both and see which one you like

    Enjoy

If you like a lighter but still fun and accurate experiece you should try Extended Cultures.
We're working on releasing XC4 beta soon with lots of new traits for roleplaying, a new economical model, vastly rebalanced battle system and lots of original tricks, especially for the BI exe.

    Here's our latest previews:

    *facepalm*

no, its just that vanilla RTW only used part or none of the full correct names. like in EB, romans now have several different types of equites (literally, "horses") whereas in vanilla, it was just equites. EB uses historically correct names, so they seem like different units, but they really are just elaborating. nothing is any older or younger than in vanilla RTW.

the only time-related change in anything i can think of is the fact that the lorica segmentata (best armor for romans in vanilla) is not included in EB, because apparently not only was it uncommon, but it was not used until later than the time period of both vanilla and EB.

    it does look cool though.

well, it does get to the entire Roman Army in AD 70. Lorica Segmentata is more expensive and useful in combat and also lighter than Chainmail. The Chainmail made the roman army easier defeated, like Comitasenses

Except that LS never made it to more than 10/20% of the troops and most legions fighting on the front preferred the much less maintenance intensive hamata.

Also, comitanenses weren't any weaker than the older legions, the problem is that they spent more time fighting internal enemies than external ones.
ecoThe roman military kept excellent quality as long as the economy could support them, after that everything went downhill in the west, the east stood for another millennia.

    hmm..
the Comitatenses only looks weaker, but i prefer the marian normal army of normal legionary cohorts
maybe the barbarians came stronger, not the legions who became weaker.
well, thanks, because I got confused who is growing stronger or becaming weaker
