Yet, rulers back then did invent family ties, from both divine and not so divine roots. The Mithridatids of Pontos claimed descent from Alexander and Cyrus the Greats for example. Heck, Alexander himself probably spread the rumour that he was descended from an earlier Egyptian Pharaoh when he was in Egypt. And I don't have a source, but I do remember reading that the Antigonids did use the Argeads dynasty name and probably invented a connection to the Argeads.
