just clamber the first tower, on top are some troops, slay them and focus on killing the dragon there, he'll do rounds on the palisades but he won't touch you, so you can pretty much train on killing him without any problems.
Might want to upgrade your bow though, the dragon takes about 150 arrows or so to kill.

I did the dragon some days ago. Two upgrades on the bow you find on the second tower in that area (compound shortbow?) and around 20 minutes of shooting at him as he flew by the first tower did the trick. I took 200 arrows with me, can't remember how many I had left. A bit disappointing really; such a cheap way to dispose of an amazing creature.
Since then I've been in a bit of a stats dilemma. I'm torn between boosting my strength to 22 ASAP so I can use the exceptionally good purple flame shield without the massive drain on stamina each time I block, boosting up my endurance so I can use the flame shield without needing to strip off more armour in order to stay nimble, or meeting the basic spell casting stat requirements so I can get a couple of spells to use with the catalyst I found.
Magic would get me a short term boost but delay the length of time before I can use the flame shield for my favoured spear and shield style.

Like I said, for me, it took about 80 arrows to kill the dragon. It was a little cheap- but the walkways became much more peaceful afterwards.
I defeated the 3-1 boss with my thief (my current favorite character). That area was amazing. The dark, crumbling catwalks, deadly magic wielding guards, insane prisoners, and more. I racked up a few more deaths there, but it was a great experience. I think that fact that I was carry around almost 20,000 souls around at one point only helped ratchet up the tension.
I'm also kind of unsure where to go with my thief's stats. I've pumped dex and str until I stopped getting attack power increases and added enough to faith to get access to miracles. I could always use more stamina, so I might go for that.... I'm currently wielding a dagger in my main hand for backstabbing and slashing damage with an estoc in my off hand for the range and it's piercing damage.

Well...
Ended up getting a PS3 before coming back to school, and got this game on the advice of a friend. Have fiddled around a bit, but haven't gotten through the first level yet.Tried first as barbarian, made negative progress, and decided to scrap in in favor of a wanderer. Getting better, but sword fighting the knights is dang tough... at least I haven't lost my souls yet.
Also, was it really necessary to have the shiny pit o' death in the first level?![]()
It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then, the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.
Bump, since there's discussion about this game going on in the "What are you playing?" topic.
Wow, almost a year since I got the game. It doesn't seem so long as that.
BTW, there's a sequel under production. No details yet.
