I am half Spanish and have spent quite a while looking for some stuff about the reconquista of Spain from the Moors. I have visted several of the 'Fronteras' but have heard nothing but hearsay and Rumour about what actually happened. I missed this period of history when I went to school here and know that what happened must have taken years of ruthless and Brilliant campaigning, but don't actually know the details of what happened. Does anyone else know?
Also, I have never heard of the Spanish "tercios" which someone else mentioned in a different topic, what was the big deal with them?

the reconqusta of spain has its roots all the way back to the visgoths when the claimed spain for a homeland and expelled what was left of the roman army, and was completed in the 1400s, the "spanish" or kingdoms of aregon and catalonia(i think) united and fought against varus muslum forces, such as the calhph of baghdad, the almohads, and sultanite of morrocco(excuse my spelling), the units that are aa crase i think are the troops that would become the "conqustador" style troops that claimed the new world for spain

yes, I think I got that.
So the Visgoths actually started the Reconquista? Certainly something that I didn't know. Thanks.
It still amazes me that Christtan Spain, The one that most people seem to know about, has been around for less time than any of the other rulers have. Ho hum, you live and learn.

For more information visit my web site

    THE RE-CONQUEST OF MUSLIM IBERIA

Also there are a number of books out on the subject.
I ones I have used are:

1/ History Today April 2002 vol 52(2) - The Muslim Expulsion from Spain

2/ El Cid and the Reconquista 1050 - 1492 - David Nicolle - illustration by Angus McBride

3/ The Moors - The Islamic West - 7th to 15th centures AD - David Nicolle - illustration by Angus McBride

Most medieval books will include sections on the period, and depending on how good the book is, one on the Crusades should also have good sections on the history also.
