Define. I consider myself a conservative, but not a CDU-conservative, rather a free market and libertarian conservative, which actually aligns me more closely with the liberal FDP (though not by much).
Isn't it kind of dumbed down to only have 2 options to explain ones political stand.
Also, he is talking about American politics as well.
Conservative - crazy insane christian warmongering zealots full of tax cuts no regulation and loves croynism and corperatism.
Liberal - Wallstreet suit who wants croynism and corperatism as well, but they want no regulation on drugs so they can get smoke a joint while doing stocks and shares.

Frack (BSG swearing is allowed, right?) I am not liberal - why did I choose that option. But neither am I conservative
.
Meh, forget this...

You made the same thread twice, why?

Read the OP, he said by "popular demand". I think it was because of my post, which pointed out that everything in Europe is shifted to the left, so very few Europeans would rather agree with US Republican policies. Plus, GOP vs Dems is simply so America-centric. In the multi-national, rather diverse Backroom.
Do you hate Drug Cartels? Do You believe that the Drug War is basically a failure? Do you think that if we Legalized the Cannabis market, that use rates would drop, we could put age limits on cannabis, tax it, and other wise regulate it? Join The ORG Marijuana Policy Project!
In American politics, similar to British politics, we have a choice between being shot in our left testicle or the right testicle. Both parties advocate pissing on the little guys, only in different ways and to a different little guy.
The content of the term 'conservative' varies from country to country. Same with 'liberal'. Obviously I am not going to vote.

Or social-democrat, if you prefer...

I'm one of those people that might appear conservative if I filled in a multi-choice quiz today, but in fact my ideas would really be quite radical and reactionary for the society I live in... kind of like Hitler I guess.![]()
At the end of the day politics is just trash compared to the Gospel.
With the two choices presented I went with liberal(I rarely go for Gah, but maybe should have) but I agree it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, if your country is already liberal and you want it to stay that way, that would make you a conservative and a liberal at the same time...

Radical Social Democrat, so neither of those positions are suitable.

I find my political philosphy to go from one extreme to the other.
In general, I believe the well-educated individual will always make better choices about their behavior and their finances than any well-intentioned government ever could. I believe in non-interventionist foreign policies because I respect the sovereignty of places even like North Korea and Iran, and consider the overthrow of Kim Jong-Il (or Saddam Hussein) a matter for North Koreans (or Iraqis), not well intentioned Americans.
That being said, experience and knowledge of the world has proven to me that the ideal I list above, orginally articulated by my hero Alexander Hamilton, is probably unattainable.
All I have to do is read a story about the widespread abuses women, children and the elderly suffer in our society, and I could easily become a Leninist, minus the ban on religion. Are there any collectivist-authoritarian-Christian ideologies out there? If somebody says "Lords' Resistance Army" they're going to get a fat lip.... That's not at all what I mean.

As I have posted at length in other threads, "conservative" and "liberal" are so abused in American politics that they are often used to describe the polar opposite of their, you know, meaning. When someone describes himself as a "conservative," I usually think, "Good luck with whatever you mean when you say that." The same for self-described liberals. The words have lost all meaning.
Second the reference to EMFM's thread. Until you go issue-by-issue, it's very hard to get a real grip on another person's politics.

do you mean like the numerous communes of christians that live under some form of 'traditional' social structure, living off of crops that they grow and selling the excess at farmer's markets?
these people always give me the creeps when i buy their lettuce..

now i'm here, and history is vindicated.
I can't place myself as either. I support conservative government spending yet liberal government regulation of business. I support in general a more libertarian view so I want liberal gun laws and such. I feel people should be free to have abortions, I support euthanasia for people that want it. Instead of social engineering I'd rather recognize that environment and upbringing do affect people and so set high standards for kids in school in math, english, and sciences. I'm very conservative toward immigration and believe that it should be tightly controlled and only foreigners in key fields should be allowed to immigrate as well as support a very strict enforcement against illegal immigrants. I think drugs such as marijuana should be legal and that users or people in possesion of hard drugs within a certain small quantity should be fined and put in rehab programs while dealers and producers of harder drugs should be locked away forever with no probation.
So I don't know, I still think of myself as a moderate for the most part.

Four stage strategy from Yes, Minister:
Stage one we say nothing is going to happen.
Stage two, we say something may be about to happen, but we should do nothing about it.
Stage three, we say that maybe we should do something about it, but there's nothing we can do.
Stage four, we say maybe there was something we could have done, but it's too late now.

Social democrat. Thanks for including that option and many, many others on the poll, Zain.
Ideally, yes. That's pretty much where the radical side of it comes in. Basically I support a heavily reformed Democracy that is more Participatory and inclusive, and which would implement Socialism insofar as a state can. At that point an activist and radical working class can destroy what the state cannot, and take power for themselves.

I am a believer in the quote, who ever said it, and it is attributed to several, and I will paraphrase;
