Splash screen freezes

I installed RTW outside of program files, patched to 1,5, and installed the mod. This worked well, but when I try to start the game, using the Single Player-shortcut, the game freezes on the splash screen, and I have to shut it down with the task manager.

I have tried to modify the preferences.txt, that i heard could cause splash screens crashes, but that was unsuccessfull.

Any ideas? I'm somewhat at loss.
