    Default Student Investor

This doesn't really belong here, but since we don't have an economics forum, this is probably the best place.

I'm currently studying Economics at A Level (The last two years of High school for you Yanks), and I'm taking part in the "ifs Student Investor" game, where people aged from 14-19 can register with their school and create a team of four investors and £100,000 (Obviously, not real money) to invest on the FTSE. My team is the The Dead Cat Bounce, and if ther Orgah would like, I could keep them informed about our progress. The other reason I posted this was because although the majority of the teams appear to be British, there is nothing in the rules explicitly stating that they must be in the Uk. So... If anyone is currently in the equivalent of high school, and has even a passing interest in economics, or even just a game, then pester your teacher to attempt to register you and a team from your school.

There is a similar thing in Aus, the Sharemarket game, as it is so aptly called. We get $50 000 and put it on the ASX. Good fun when I played, though simply not investing caused me to have more money at the end than most.

Heh, when did you play it? I attempted last year, but it was disheartening when the entire economy went kablooey, taking the stockmarket with it. Whatever I invested in went down :(

You'd make an excellent fund manager then, especially in the pensions arena.

I was looking at some workmates super today. 5 thousand in over a year, minus 1400 in "advisor fees" for his advisor based in another state who he had never been contacted by, 600 in admin fees and 600 in taxes.

They took out over half of what he put in, and hes meant to retire off this?

We got to do that same thing in my econ class last year! Each student had $10,000 to invest in 2-4 stocks of his or her choice. I think I ended up making about $3,000 in net profit when we sold our stocks 5 months later (And this was January-May)

The best was I think someone ended up make $13,000 in 5 months.

I did this last Fall in Econ 351 Money and Banking. It was when the market was going CRAZY and I mean crazy. I'd short the entire market using futures and it would drop 500 points or something. I had 500,000 to start and turned around 50% profit. I think I finished near the top of my class.

Well done! I myself barely managed to scrape by with 10% profit. But this was back in high school, and I didn't care much for it.

My team is in it too! We are called "The Spectatorship" Right now we are losing money badly... we are ranked 1288

I played it the year before as well, failed to win the top prizes, but we did a quiz and was randomly chosen to be awarded a prize (A notebook, a pen and a water-clock...)
