    Default Proposing

I've been together with my girlfriend for more than 10 years now. We've been living together for more than a year, which is a far bigger test on our relationship than the 9 years before that. We've been talking about children and marriage on many occasions.
It's time I ask the question.

So how did you propose? Was proposed to? Or heard of a great way to propose.

I wasn't very good. Suggested that we get married over drinks at a party, which prompted her to yell at me for not having class for a day or so. But she said yes, so all's well that ends well.

Also, to add to my unorthodoxy, I knew that she had been wanting a dog since forever, and I had said no to it. So I suggested that she could have an engagement ring or an engagement dog. She picked the dog.

Needless to say, the dog attended the wedding:

Proposed on my knees at midnight on New Year's Eve with a huge rock in my hand. Worked like a charm.

I'd do it on new years eve, at midnight as well. Since its close enough that you arent waiting forever and its far enough away to get prepared (and also pay for the ring)

You've been dating her for 10 years and want to propose now? Sure you want to rush into this?

Pick a date that has special meaning to her, the first time you met, first date, whatever.

For me it was Valentines Day. Distracted her with the roses and when she finished reading the card and looked at me I was on bended knee with the ring.

waited until her Birthday, took her out to a very nice dinner, then took a Midnight Walk on Montecito Beach where after having planned out exactly everything I wanted to say, my brain decided to turn into mush and I couldn't remember what I had wanted to say. So, I nervously took the ring out of my pocket, and got down on my knee on the Wet Beach where I sank about a half a foot in the sand, and said something along the lines of "Do you want to make it official?" Which is kind of strange thing to say, but she said "no." which my heart sank for about five seconds until she said "you're an idiot. Of course."

They make deli slices of frozen pepsi now? Awesome!
You also need to purchase a small freezer for storage of your pepsi.
It runs on batteries. You'll need a few.
Uhh, I guess I won't have pepsi then. Do you have change for a twenty?

    Congrats man.

I'm not sure about proposal. The callous, tough guy image is all I got so I generally avoid "aaww" and "ooohh" moments. However there's this playful, childish side of the jerk that I am. I can see myself taking my girlfriend to some remote island and pull a huge prank on her, putting her to tears. Then the next day, have a boat "save" us carrying the question while I sneak up on her carrying huge rock.

My wife and I worked together at a restaurant at the entrance to HersheyPark (a theme park in the town that chocolate built). Every Christmas season, they would open the park for "Christmas Candy Lane" and put up tens of thousands of lights on the trees and buildings - it was quite a magical scene. On Christmas Eve nearly 26 years ago on the way over to her parents house, I took her to the entrance of the park. My intention was to walk her down to the restaurant amidst all the lights and propose to her. Unfortunately the weather was bad and everything was quite icy. So to avoid any broken bones, I drove in as close as I could to the entrance and proposed to her in the car. It was still a very nice evening, but it could have been better. She liked it and I guess that is what counts.

In a related story, a few months before that in the fall, I had decided to proposed to her. We had been looking at engagement rings casually so I knew what ring she wanted. I bought the ring one day after work and then picked her up to go back to my place. As we got there, she was expressing some frustration with not getting married. I was grinning inside and said to her, "Hey, how do you know I don't have your engagement ring in my pocket right now?" That ended the conversion. Hehehe, little did she know... ...and fortunately she didn't call my bluff.

Glad it worked out for you... For me it wouldn't have. I hate when women start hinting at marriage, and even more when they begin to get upset about me not asking them. I firmly believe, that since the asking is placed on my shoulders, so is the timing for it. So if she wants me to ask eventually, she doesn't get to complain about the timing!

I actually broke off a couple of relationships because of that kind of pressure. Not cool.

There wasn't any pressure to me because my mind was already heading in that direction. It was just a matter of waiting until Christmas Eve rolled around. I knew that but she didn't.

Wow, ten years... My parents did it after two months... And it is a happy, now 20+ year marriage.

I did not know such men existed anymore, who would wait all that time. Quite commendable . If you do not mind answering, how old are you?

I was going to post some half baked advice, but this pretty much sums up my situation. All I'm going to say is good luck, and if the girl has been hanging around for ten years, you've probably got this in the bag.

Wow... This is nearly exactly what I did.
Took her out for her birthday (dinner etc.) then walked with her in the city center park and waited until after midnight (a new day). We sat on a bench and there were no people around. I fished the ring out of my pocket got down on one knee in front of her and without stumbling (at least that is how I remember it) said: "I love you, and have loved you since the day we met. Can I be your husband? Will you marry me?" Her eyes brimmed with tears and she answered: "Of course my love".
The ring was a few sizes to big and we kept the engagement a secret for 2 weeks until she got the ring back with the right size. It was a plain Gold ring with a single diamond embedded into it.

Well, for me it was rather unromantic, just came naturally in the discussion that we were going to get married, and it immediatly went technical(as marrying a foreigner is a lot of papers). At least, no problem wondering how to ask the question. As it will seemingly not happen to you, I cannot you give you specific advice.

Though as you must know her rather well, I'd say like above : choose a moment when you know she will be open-minded & happy.

Also know that she will say yes.

I would also recommend living together before marrying as well, not the typical US method of getting married then living together and find out you can't even stand it.

It's time I ask the question.

So how did you propose? Was proposed to? Or heard of a great way to propose.
I asked her the last day of our vacation in Tunesia.

We had a romantic candle light dinner and afterwards I took her out for a walk on the beach. Went on my knees and asked the question. She said yes

A friend of mine did something more original.

He and his girlfriend would watch some DVD. Instead of the movie DVD, he had recorded himself while reading a text and asking "the" question. He put in that DVD instead of the movie DVD, said he needed to go to the toilet, instead secretly went to the kitchen for a bottle of champagne, two glasses and the engagement ring.

He took his time and when he came back in the living room, he found his girlfriend in tears, murmuring "yes, I will".
