I believe they answered your questions before, and a search can easily uncover the origins.

but where the heck is that "other thread" with the legendary lion helmet picture anyway ??? i too have done a forum search for "facemask", "hetairoi Kataphractoi" etc and nothing relevant popped up ...

and sorry for wasting the space and time or doing sth wrong...

i did go through the entire thread... on post#6 Abou mentions "The masks for the Hetairoi Kataphraktoi come directly from the main source - a relief from Afghanistan. On it are three very heavily armored riders with masks: a Zeus type and two "big cat" types."

post#8 by Paulus reads "I can however tell you that the hetairoi kataphraktoi mask is one of 3 masks depicted on a trio of cavalrymen from a relief found in Afghanistan during the current war. Its not published, but one of our historians has seen it in a museum archive"

so no pics of the flaming helmets unfortunately :( :( :(

So is anyone in these forums in possession of photos of these masks ??? I think we can all agree that hetairoi kataphractoi are one of the most badass units featured and it would be extra nice to see some real pictures of them...
