Didn't the Celts pretty much take over Europe you know for a few hundred years?
Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.

I think this game has too many trees, when I attack an army on the campaign map I'm constantly thrown into a huge untamed forest despite there being no such woodland on the strat map

Oh and the same with elevation; the amount of times I find myself having to scale epic mountains whilst being butchered by a storm of javelins blows my mind. I find myself going stright for siege battles because at least there's relatively even ground and no damn trees!

Well, as a matter of fact, playing as Sweboz... i looove those same danse and dark forest that so many people here hate... how many Have I been beaten by roman legions on even force, but massacred... no... butchered them, with considerably smaller force, due to those same blessed forests!
Opinions are like bacteries : we all have, but it's better to keep them for ourself... (By me!)

If they were fixed some, then I would also like them too because they add an epic feel to the game. By fix, I mean that when you zoom all the way out, you should be able to see your men and nearby enemy, highlighted or in some sort of foggy view. Then you could at least tactically move your men around.
Imo, the following "mod" is almost perfect:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
For installation process, I followed the following: RTW Gold > Alexander > EB 1.1 > 1.2 > Official Fixes > 1.2 Mini Mod Pack 3.1 > LZ3's Custom EB Fix Adaptation > Phalanx Mod > RS Textures > Naval Strat Map Add On > Lysander's Sihunet Formations Adaptations > EOM 4 Carthaginian Governors Edition > Atraphoenix' RS Legions Adaptation For ALEXANDER EB > Getting Rid Of The Giant Trees Mod > (I've also modded the Roman reforms to happen sooner, deleted 7 files/folders to get rid of window lights and torches for night battles, and added 3 SKYMOD_BI .txt files for night lighting.) - The only thing missing is a 12 turns per year mod, maybe 6 tpy instead.

Has anyone ever actually been a fool, and decided to keep the giant trees?

Also, I would have thought that was the kind of thing which would have made it's own way into an official EB release.
