Speaking about longbows, I heard there's this kind of longbow that was used in really ancient war bak in China, where they had to use their FEET to yank on the wood and use the body and arm to pull the sinew string (each bow was used by 2 ppl - 1 for shooting and one for reloading) and its speed and strength is just terrible, plus it was used to shoot multiple arrows at once.

Sry got a bit off-topic there but I admit there are some interesting stuff about Islamic weaponry as well =]

Now that is the best explanation I have seen yet why crossbows are not aimed at an angle. However if used in mass all you really need to do is get the angle right... so why wasn't it used like that?

it really depends on how it was used actualy,so i don't know why also another interesing thing is how the european swords evolved,first they were double edged until it ended in being single edged much like the arabic swords..some say the sabre is derived from the scimitar(or saif).

Interesting link, Faisal - it's a little vague on dates, but then I suspect they may actually be vague. I'd like to know more about the Medieval composite bow - I think some of the Muslim archers lose out by being bundled with the "ordinary" shortbowmen. I read a reference to Saracen horse archers besting (2nd?) Crusader longbowmen which was tantalising but it was not a scholarly one. Another reference attribute that Crusade's success to the crossbow rather than the knight. Yet another said crusaders brought home the idea of the crossbow to N. Europe (that may be the 1st crusade though). Doing research on the internet is frustrating... I should read some proper books, I guess...
