Question for the history professors...

After having just read "In The Age Of Chivalry" by Time Life books,I became aquainted with a medieval figure that i have never, in all my reading on wars and heroic figures ever heard of. his name was William Marshall, A knight. He fought beside and soon became a favorite of Richard the Lion Heart,Knighted Prince William,and was the gaurdian of a young king Henry the third. If anyone knows of any books or further resources were I can learn more about him please let me know.

William Marshall (or more accurately Mareschal), Earl of Pembroke and Striguil was actually advisor to 4 English Kings.

The articles were very helpfull and informative.

Perhaps you could reccomend some books on medieval history? not dealing only with war but with the culture in general.As i said i just finished "In The Age of Chivalry". Currently I'm reading a two volume set entitled; "The Shorter Cambridge Medieval History" it deals with briefly with important facts and figures from the later Roman Empire to the Renaissance.


Any comments or suggestions would be apreciated,

David Nicolles 2 Volume work "Medieval Warfare Source Book" is probably my favourite in terms of military. It covers virtually everything between the 4th and 14th centuries.

Can't help you too much on the culture stuff - not really my area (do a search on Amazon and have a read of some of the readers reviews - I'm sure you'll find a lot).

However, two books I especially like are Michael Woods "In Search of The Dark Ages" and "In Search of The Doomsday Book" (published by the BBC). I bit specialised but very readable and covers all aspects of "culture" in this periods.

In fact all of his "In Search of ..." series are outstanding. Not to be missed
