I've not found it dangerous myself, but I do notice an influx of agents from other factions.

I typically sell map info as one step in a series of diplomatic maneuvers.

Step 1. Trade Rights
Step 2. Give 100 florins tribute over 10 years
Step 3. Offer Map Info for 1000 florins.
Step 4. Ask for Alliance.

The idea to tribute florins and then follow up with selling map info is that although you're basically breaking even, you have the 1000 florins up front, like an interest free loan.

If a faction rejects the map info, I try to lower the price if possible, and finally trade map info. Sometimes they just don't have the money. If I can't get anything after offering tribute, I just chalk it up to the price of boosting relations.
