Default Preparing your game and advertising it

About a fortnight ago I PMed all the hosts listed on the hosting list queue.

    It said:
    Greetings Mafia hosts,

I am sending this information as a heads up. Even though your game might be seemingly far down on the list, your turn could potentially be just around the corner. A lot of hosts have claimed a slot on the list quite a while ago, and when their turn comes, they forfeit.

It would be in the interest of the gameroom and its players that you do as much preparation as possible before your turn suddenly appears.
Ideally your game is already planned out; intro already written and role descriptions already created.

If not, we advise that you take some time now and prepare your amazing game.
And when your time finally arrives - everything is ready.

    Thanks,
    Sigurd
I feel the need to repeat this message and maybe make it public.

All you who want to host a game of some size and complexity; we strongly advise you to prepare your game in advance.
Finding yourself fourth or fifth on the queue list could mean your game is due right around the corner. We have experienced that if one forfeits his/her game, the next would also forfeit because the game is not prepared - they thought they had at least another month. Even more so the third and the forth - who thought they had even longer time to prepare.

If you prepare your game now, it will be ready when the time comes for it to be placed in an available slot.
I am 8th in the queue and have probably done 70% of the work on my game.

Another aspect of preparing is to advertise your game.
If you prepare early enough, you could do subtle advertisement in your broadband signature (currently limited to 500 x 200 px - but not heavily moderated - don't overdo it though)
[You do have the "Broadband user see larger signatures" checked in your profile - right?]

You could of course use your regular signature - but then the .org rules apply.

As some of you can possibly see, I am starting to promote my game. It could be a bit early, but it is mostly to illustrate as an example what you could do.
Big games in the gaming industry - always start advertising early - to create a hunger among their potential customers. They see flashy pictures and a craving is created.
The wait has to be timed perfectly, and the game needs to be delivered as promised.

If you do not have broadband enabled in your profile, this is the images I will be putting in my signature up until the game starts:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I got the idea from boudica who made similar banners to her magician game. An excellent idea.

Any host with the ability to make such banners should make them available a while before the game reaches the top of the list to attract players.

Gameroomers can help promote your game by taking one of the banners and place it in their signature showing they support you and want to play your game.
We, the moderators, (well, at least I) are willing to put your advertisement in our signatures.

I only see the updated version of your Norse coat of arms.

Of course, I also have my signatures not set to broadband, so that could be why.

That's what I see as well. I believe I have sigs set to broadband, I'll have to check that though.

The images including my Royal coat of arms are all hosted at the same site: Photobucket.

There have been some updates since I started using that site a few years ago. I wonder if you have to enable them for sharing? But if you can see my coat of arms you should be able to see the other images.

I just checked and I have broadband sigs on. The images in the spoiler still don't show up and the image in my sig didn't show up until I reloaded the page.

    Uh, yeah it's Adblock +.

EDIT: I just realised that your things are called "Advertisement X". Which is probably why my Adblocker is blocking it.

I like the idea of advertising your game early on.

It forces you to start thinking about the theme and the game itself and it activates the "invent story and roles" part of the brain

Starting early can only be beneficial for your game.

For people who keep getting it wrong like me. The space for it is under "Edit your details" at the bottom, and you just link to the picture. (no [img] tags)

Cool, I can see them now. Good work.

Btw, I want to get some banners made for my game, but my skills in that area are somewhat lacking, in that they're non-existent. Would anyone be able to help?

I'd be glad to make banners if you provide me with as best a description as you can provide, a font to use, or a general idea, maybe a picture or two.

I spoiler tagged this because I don't want everyone who comes in here to have to see my huge advertisement for myself :P

Open this if you're interesting in seeing works of mine for reference...

As you can see, I'm not amazing, and I'm rather prone to overdoing things with way too many foreground characters, but I still try

There is a thread in the entrance hall (its looking rather empty at the moment) where you can request a signature design. Split is brilliant at this however

On a different note I just tried to make a signature for Andres upcoming game, 'daggers in the night' anyone want to see? (baring in mind the image i use isn't actually of my own work )

Well, I've created all my roles, as well as the intro and the quotes each role will get.A day or so spent writing role PM's, and I'm all set to host. I just need to wait until June...

Do you want to host it earlier? I could remove the date and let you host when your game reaches the top.

No, there's no way I could. I have A Level Exams before then, and it would just cause pandemonium. I have a nice long summer where I'm doing nothing, so I'll do it then.
