Default Why do you love the sport you are into?

I guess topic name says it all.

My sport is downhill skiing, guess you can call me a speed freak. This link describes my emotion pretty well.

So why do I love skiing?

Someone put it very well once, downhill skiing is about being 100% in control of being 100% out of control...

You don't really compete against anyone else, it's just you and the mountain... And you know that even the slightest misstake can lead to death. And that's no joke either, skiing is a dangerous sport. The speed kills, the avalanches kills, the rocks and trees will kill you...

Basicly, it's a battle for survival all the way down. And it's not like you hold back, hell no, you go ALL IN or go home.

So yeah, that is why I love skiing...

The speed, the thrill, the feeling of being on the edge...

When I really get into it, I lose myself and enter a form of trance...

It goes WAY to fast to be able to think, you just react. To make it down in that high speeds, you have to shut your brain off, and just let your body react to whatever the mountain hits you with next.

I guess it's a form of meditation for me :)

So, that's teh sport I love, and why. Next one?

I know what you mean Kadgar...

Its been a while now, but I was a die hard downhiller in my youth.
I had one serious crash which nearly crippled me, and that was on the slope in a part where the snow was hard but fortunately deep. Doing top speed and losing one of your skis means trouble (Yeah.. I forgot to tighten the bindings[sic]). I can to this day not remember anything from that fall. I remember losing my ski in a tight turn and woke up looking at the sky.

Every free moment during the winter was spent on a hillside. We even skipped school to get up into those white mountains. I had friends which enjoyed freestyle more - which even made it to the national team. But I was heavier and liked the speed.

    I love women's beach volleyball.

I like it because of the sacrifices these women have made to get to where they are, the effort put in, the total devotion. It is an inspiration to me throughout my life. In the bleakest of times, at my weakest moments, I think of the sacrifices they have made, to pull me through.

    Mountain biking.

I am just an amateur, though. I like being in a natural environment with those trees and occasional meetings with wild animals. The other thing I like is the feeling when you conquer a steep hill. I am not that good on descending: high speed is not really my passion. Mountain biking helps a lot during the exam sessions and other difficult moments since it helps me sort out the things in my mind. It is also an excellent way to finish the day. And of course, it helps in looking decently.

    Does that still cost extra?

I'm a sports junkie, always have been. I really can't get enough of them. My goal before I graduate is to get ironman status while still weighing 230+. I constantly troll triatholons hoping to get a date (well not really, time constriants are a son of a gun)

However now as I venture into the more individual sports I can say without a doubt my true love will always be American football.

It is simply the best, not just the sport but simply the way it engulfes the enitreity of your exsistence.

Running is cheap, I get constant scenery changes, I can do it on broken and uneven ground (which makes it much more fun), and I don't need to pay for expensive gear or a gym membership. Maximum bang for my buck.

Cricket. Good, fun, challenging game, that requires a lot of patience and the right mind set to be good at it, a short game takes the better part of a day, and a long game takes the better part of a week, and although I do enjoy shorter faster paced games, there's really nothing quite like cricket. A game like football(which ever you prefer) is full of excitement and engery, but cricket is more about a long strategy. If I was more eloquent I could go on, but I'm finding it hard to explain just why, and how much, I love this game. Maybe some other cricket lover could help me out?

Also, some people seem to think it's complicated, but it makes perfect sense to me.

    Noodling.

It's fun, dangerous, scary and stupid all rolled into one. Why use something intelligent like a pole or trot line when you can use your hands and instead drown or have your arm mangled by a beaver.

I'd have to second this, only to reach the pinnacle of perfection, it needs to be topless women beach volleyball.

    I love playing waterpolo.

It requires strength and finesse, teamwork and individual skill and huge reserves of grit and determination, nothing else quite feels the same to me. I guess that's why we all like the sports we do...they just have that je ne sais quoi that appeals to each of us individually.

Easily rectified by a quick post in the babe thread and a link here. Come on now, don't be stingy.

I love baseball. It's not just that it's exceedingly complex and can be thoroughly exciting in the playoffs. It's just as much the ambiance of going to a ball game. It's really something that can't be explained, it must be experienced.
"You must know, then, that there are two methods of fight, the one by law, the other by force: the first method is that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is therefore necessary for a prince to know well how to use both the beast and the man.

    Mountainbike
It's strange... I can swoosh down the slopes on skis, but when I get on a mountainbike I get terrified!

Maybe it's because if I fall on skis I at least have the hope of landing in deep snow, while in summer there is just a very hard ground with rocks all over...

But to be honest, I think it's just cause I have been skiing all my life, while mountainbiking came when I was already a teenager...

Have the outmost respect for mountainbikers though!

    Waterpolo
Tried it once, never again. It should be called water rugby, or water wrestling... Or why not "let some guy twice your size with lungs like a whale do his best to keep you under the surface till you get blue".

No seriosly, I felt like a complete idiot.

I am rather well trained, I swim ok, have always been good at ball sports...

So I tagged along to a friends training, the team is good but by no means world class!

I was... Brutalized... And had soem near death experiences...

15 min into the training I was by teh edge of the pool, arms on land, breathing heavily, body completely DEAD, swearing "never again".

I dont know what they feed the guys who do waterpolo, but I was so tired in my whole body that I couldnt imagine people doing this for fun...

    So again, ALL respect...

    Baseball

I thought this sport was soooooooooo lame... Untill I got to the states and watched a game live.

I think that half of what makes baseball fun is, as has been said, the atmosphere and the traditions. cause lets face it, the sport aint THAT fun, nor to play or to watch.

But, as I watched it live, I was strangely drawn into the game. Very unexpected, I must say.

Guess it's a bit like soccer, also boring in theory, but great live when good teams play.

There's uphill and downhill both in cross-country skiing.

    Yes.

However, there is cross-country skiing and there is downhill-skiing.

We use the term downhill skiing to be precise.

To answer your question though, yes there are also uphill skiers. Every year in Austria at least (dont know about the rest of the world) they have a competition of who can reach the top fastest on skis, at various places spread over the alps.

It's not a very popular sport though, as most (like me) much prefer to take the lift up and ski down.

So basicly, when the term "downhill skier" is used it means a guy who takes the lift up and skis down.

cross-country skier = a guy who skis on the flat.

Upphill skier = a strange form of machochism that is not very common.

Thank you for your time :)

I just love it when something like CL finals 2005 happens. Those matches are just beautiful to watch.

Its fun to play with good mates. Winning makes it even better.

I have had a fair few sprained wrists, but nothing serious *touches wood*

Skis are scary, despite having excellent balance due to childhood of climbing and gymnastics, i have never been comfortable on skis, blades or skates.

I used to run cross country back highschool, and have gotten back into running to get my weight, cholesterol, high blood pressure under control. I like how I feel afterwards, for the most part, but at my age pain is God's way of letting me know I'm still alive *it's kinda like hitting your thumb with a hammer, feels so good when I stop*. Some days I'm feeling very alive. Today I forgot to bring along my carbo-candy, and my blood sugar plunged to 42. I almost passed out before I got home.
