Thread: Netherworld II [Concluded]

  1. #181

Default Re: Netherworld II (IN PLAY)

Alright, I'm not a total -derogatory term for inexperienced player- where mafia games are concerned. But I am used to games where use of the term 'WIFOM' does not count as a substitute for addressing someone's argument.

Put simply, Thermal Mercury gave two reasons why I might be suspected of being a killer, and I addressed both of those points on their own terms, attempting to show that, in each case, the alternative was more likely to be true. The point wasn't to prove my innocence, just to show that the arguments against me were rubbish.

It isn't a total-derogatory term at all, everyone is a newbie at one point or another.

The derogatory version is "n00b" because it isn't whether or not they are actually new, it is because they are really bad at it and it isn't from lack of practise either.

    Tally:

TinCow 6(Yaropolk, Seon, Thermal Mercury, Chaotix, Cultured Drizzt fan, Andres)
    GH 3(ATPG, YLC, Diamondeye)
    Beskar 2(GH, Winston Hughes)
    Diamondeye 2(Diamondeye, Joooray)
    Winston Hughes 2(Beefy187, johnhughthom)
    Splitpersonality 1(ACIN)
    Csargo 1(Sprig)
    Sprig 1(pevergreen)
    Joooray 1(scottishranger)
    YLC 1(TinCow)
    Double A 1(Peasant Phill)
    Scienter 1(Sigurd)
    Chaotix 1(splitpersonality)

    A few reminders, folks:

    1) You MUST unvote a previous vote to reissue it. I'm a stickler for things like that.

    2) If the players would help keep a tally, that would be awesome for my benefit.

    3) You may NOT vote for the dead.

There's still over 24 hours of discussion left. Good, if contentious, discussion.

And as for Khazaar, it's true that I have voted for him repeatedly in another game. But for that very reason, if I were a villain here, it would seem very foolish to kill Khazaar on the first night, since (as has indeed come to pass) it would seem likely to draw unnecessary attention to me.
This post is full of WIFOM. And its not the kind of the defense you would want to use on day 1.

Ah but maybe he wants to exploit the sentiment that he is a noobie looking (he is not) to use the WIFOM technique to summon suspiscion against himself while at the same time using the sentiment that mafioso players don't use WIFOMS on the first day to rid himself of suspiscion at the same time.

Edit: Now if that thing made any sort of sense, contact me. I promise not to tell anyone else that you are Cthulhu.

........Or perhaps, WIFOM is the only defense anyone can really use on Day 1, short of role reveal. Think about it. There are no night actions to speak of that one can account for, no previous-round votes that one can cite as evidence. Nothing can be used to make a case, convoluted as it might be, except for the previous night's kills and behavior during this round.

It is nearly pointless to make any sort of serious case on someone in the first round. It is more pointless for anyone to defend themselves in the first round. Were I accused and bandwagoned this round, my response would probably be something akin to "I don't care, lynch me if you want, but this is the first round, you have no evidence, and it will be a waste."

And that will, more likely than not, get me off the hook for that round, town or not.

Actually, you know what, I think we lynched TinCow first round in some other game recently, too. Despite the fact that he is mafia, we have all game to lynch him, and it would be a shame to do so this soon.

    Unvote, Vote: split

May as well knock out one of his mindslaves.

You could ignore or make a joke about it. Otherwise there won't be any proper cases for people to vote for.

Denying it and denying it hard just makes it look really suspicious.

Exactly. And since I don't have a role to reveal...

Also, I do think there's a tendency to assume that just because something could, theoretically, be a bluff, that there's no point even considering the case being made. Instead, it just gets chalked up as 'WIFOM', and the inherent plausibility of the statements are left untested.

Which is precisely the problem: doing nothing is nearly always better than doing anything. Even if someone brings out a half-decent accusation against you, as a mafia, you're better off ignoring or dismissing it, rather than addressing it in any way. The result is that the mafia get an easy ride, because no-one is expected to defend themselves, and anyone who does is an automatic suspect.

Of course, I was fully aware of all this before starting my defence. Make of that what you will.

Oh, and since I messed up before: unvote: Beskar, vote: GeneralHankerchief
