I contributed to the national aggregate demand.

    how dare you.
Charities aren't infallible. A lot of the money you give to the bigger or more general "Help the Needy" or "Children in Need" etc. is wasted on admin. I make a specific point of not giving to big charities, and especially not to things like Red Nose Day etc. I won't be guilt-tripped into giving to a charity just because everyone else does. And I absolutely refuse to give to any sort of animal charity. Did you know that in the UK, the Donkey Sanctuary receives more money than Age Concern?

It depends on the charity. You have to research, budget, and choose the good ones.

Of course. I'm not saying I don't give to charity, but the notion that all charities are good is ridiculous.

We sent a deluxe package of food and goodies to my wife's grandma, who is both poor and too proud to accept charity on any occasion but Christmas. So every year we pack about a hundred bucks' worth of groceries into a huge box and get it to her.

I took my daughters the animal shelter, we didn't really work there or anything. But they liked playing with all the cute neglected kittens.

Uhhh... Recently nothing but I donated 120 hours to teaching ESL students how to use computers and another 130 helping at a place called Marin Link and the Marin Womens hall of fame.

This is what I meant when I said money going into charities is diluted, perhaps I exaggerated a little, but same general point. How dare me....

I find collecting & helping personally is better as you know you've personally got the money without it being worn at before the needy receive it.

You're better off giving to either specific cause charities, such as Spinal Research, or Marie Curie (Both of which I give to as thanks for them being extraordinarily helpful in the past), or local ones, such as North West Air Ambulance (If you live in the North West of England naturally).
