If you are just using it for work stuff press escape at startup and choose 'safe mode with network'. I assume you have Vista because it's getting slow, games won't do in safe mode but Vista is actually functional for doing basic tasks.

you could suggest
1. Defrag
2. clean all history/cookies etc
3. More Ram


you do not state what components you have on your current PC.

2- Defrag (MyDefrag formerly known as JKDefrag is known to be a good (and free) alternative to Microsoft's built-in one)
3- Review hardware

On top of what everyone else posted:

1) Stop surfing shady sites with internet explorer.

2) Post CPU, GPU, RAM (Start>>Run>>dxdiag)
