Default Dressing up as an EB unit.

I'm invited to an upcoming costume party (roughly 50 USD, all u can drink).

I have roughly 10 days to prepare a costume.

I haven't decided on wt to dress up as yet, anything that's not a Roman will do. I'm a busy clerical slave with ridiculously long hours for ridiculously low pay, so I cannot afford the money/time for something awfully expensive/time-consuming. (so no maille-knitting or antique swords)

    Any suggestions?

p.s. (how hard is it to glue cloth together to make a fake linothorax?)

Then try To get Iberi Caetrati, just need some plain white textile wrapped arround as Tunic, a plain white shorts (with a plain white skirt), a belt, and some red paint to get the colours. You can grab pig-slaughter knive, pretending it is falcata, and cut some thick cartoon to made the caetra shield. And as helmet, you can cut it from packaging cartoon too...

(If you are too lazy, just get some old blanket as cloak, and grab a stick with a point that sharpened and painted in silver, grab some cartoon shield, and wear nothing else, naked!!! And you are Uirodusios...

That truly made my day! I'll remember for the next costume.

And so, try Iberi Caetrati as I suggest, stitching up plain old bedsheet is not a hard job, and you can always borrow a slaughtering knife from your butcher neighbour

Go to the nearest shopping center and ask for plaid pajama. Not sure where you live but in the US some dollar stores sell plaid trousers which should be even cheaper. It should cost only five US dollars. If you don't wanna go topless then find a white cotton t-shirt (which you probably have somewhere in the drawer). Use a pair of scissors to cut a "v" down the middle of collar. Optionally you can also grab a belt that you wear on top of the t-shirt. Voila! You're a gaelaiche.

Since you are a Macedonian with limited resources for your get-up, you seem to have boxed yourself into a limited number of choices EB-wise.

I expect that we should leave out anything that requires a horse. Also anything that requires any sort of armor that cannot be approximated by bedsheets and such.

So assuming that you can actually come up with the requisite sticks/cardboard shield -- and hat if necessary, I guess that leaves:

    Hellenic Skirmisher
    Hellenic Slinger
    Hellenic Archer

Simple process of elimination, my dear Watson.

As a longtime Saba player, I don't feel so put-upon.

Of course the Ptolies will set that right.

    Again.

Cute Wolf your idea works but, you forgot the obvious

Hastati-All you need is any colour of clothing with some cardboard to pin to your shirt painted gold to pose as the very limited bronze protection, and a fake shield and don't worry the shield could be any size cardboard or anything else, Aemilianus won't drop you for having it not standardized.

Hastati takes no work at all, unless your the only person in the world with nothing to pin to your shirt to pose as the limited armor, and no cardboard for the fake shield, and no money to buy spray paint.

If you pick Macedonian the above post explains all.

    Pezhetairos:

    Needed:
A Huge Spear (just a big wooden stick of 8 feet)
A Small Shield with some paint...
And a Linothorax (go here how to make it:http://hetairoi.de/linothorax-eng.php)
And a Helmet (not hard to get or make)

I'll offer some tips from my experience:

On the cheap, like me, you can do a Caetratii or Botaroas

However you still have to WORK to do the equipment:

    1- Shield:
--buy plywood, measure and cut into shape. (If you don't have the equipment to cut it call a friend)
    --sand the edges

1b- Make handle for the shield:
--IF low on equipment (like me) it will look like this:

Cut long strip of wood roughly 1inch in diameter to the length of your hand.
Cut small strips of wood 2x2 or 1x2.
Make drill holes before putting the screws in. (u gotta buy long screws. If the ends stick out just cut them once you are done)

    --IF you got better equipment:
Cut a hole in the center of the shield a little bigger than your hand.
Screw the long strip of wood across the middle of the whole.
Cover the hole with a shield boss:
    http://www.darkknightarmoury.com/p-3142-steel-boss.aspx

    2- Shield boss:
-Buy one online (see above link)
-Make one buy cutting and stripping a 2x4 into shape and screwing in. Cover it with foil-tape
--->VERY HARD and time consuming and I don't recommend it. Just buy one.
-Use several layers of foil-tape and make the "Illusion" of a shield boss.
(if you want to make a shield boss for real visit the romanarmytalk.com forums)

Celtic shield has the "Illusion" shield boss, and Iberian shield has the 2x4cut shield boss.
    -
    3- Sword:
    -buy one
-Cut a piece of plywood into shape, paint it. Then nail a smaller piece of plywood to the handle and cover it with cloth/athletic tape. Don't forget to paint it.
    (see falcata sword above)

    4- Helmet:
Make the basic shape out of paper-mashe

--->This is how I learned how to make it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBbScK0qzMI
    ----its about 8vids total

After that you can either paint it directly. OR cover it with foil-tape and then lightly paint the foil-tape (this gives it a metallic feel and dulls the shininess of the foil)

    5- Clothing
    As a celt:
You can use a plaid pajama, and put a big belt over it (I used two belts).
-I recommend you make a big cape to cover your upper body with when walking around.
--IF you make a long celtic shield you can have the cape cover it too.

    Make a tunic.
-Its easy it only requires a cloth, and a little cutting and sowing.

    And you should be done

Maybe we should get the get the modlers to give use some of the high quality models so we can make papercraft helmets and greaves?

I already have 95% of a masterchief costume made out of it. :)

Hmm, I think rather than use papermash (who sometimes will break apart if someone splash you with beer),You should try adding cartoon layer to an old bike helmet.
