Bernard Cornwells new series...... lol at least he uses a freaking shield wall.

    seriously though good books.

The katan wouldnt touch a vikings chainmail and leather byrnie, wool cloth..... etc.

watching this show just pisses me off so much.

its like bash western european fighters contest.

Edit: and the experts dont know **** i know more than those queers. The samurai experts were a martial artist and some queer american-japanese guy. like seriously he sounded like he would piss his breeches in a fight.

and phillips samurai were not really "elite". Popular misconception. on average a medival knight is more elite as in terms of numbers. Everyone in a japanese army was usually "samurai". even most ronin and wako were samurai.

Actually most of japanese armies consisted of Ashigaru foot soldiers. Other then that the show only has entertainment value, nothing more nothing less.

The worst was the Shaolin Monk vs. Maori Warrior. What an insult to the Shaolin to even consider such a match. The Shaolin are so many miles above them in the skill level and sophistication of fighting and fighting techniques, and has weapons that were infinitely superior. It is like putting a US Marine against an unarmed 14 year old school girl...it is not even a fight, it is a slaughter.
I just don't understand why they cut the monk down so much in the show. (or why he was even on the show, him not being a warrior :P)

Also I think the Vlad the Impaler vs. Sun Tzu episode is going to be a pretty good acid test of their eastern bias. I mean, you're pitting one of the most psychotically brutal warriors in history (with a 2000 year technology advantage to boot) against a strategist with no record of ever having been in actual combat. Mark my words, it's going to be the most lopsided episode they've ever done.

Are they seriously doing that? Why do they always have to make the most mentally retarded match-ups ever! How is this for an excellent match-up? Hwarang vs 1st Century Parthian Cataphract?
THAT would be a bad-@$$ showdown. :P I am sure that they would find a way to mess it up though. :P

Speaking of which, if it's not too off-topic, I'd like to ask if you know any good books on Viking culture and warfare. I've asked this question many times, and am usually told to go read Osprey, and since you're an EB member you likely have a better grasp of history than the average person, even if this particular topic isn't your focus.
Books on any period in history are necessarily populist. Most actually good work is in journal articles, but if you don't have a university library that doesn't help.

Generally, avoid osprey and anything written before about 1995, as Victorian mythos did not begin to shift before then. It's actually the publisher you need to look at, Universitry Press books, D.S. Brewer, Blackwell. Names like that.

Ronin were Ronin, not Samurai, that's a contradiction in terms. As to the status of Samurai generally, it depends on the period, but generally Samurai are proffesional soldiers, while the Viking they depicted was more of the level of an itinerant raider.

Fictional British units and fictional Roman ninjas.

If they are headed down that road, they might as well go for Chuck Norris vs Bruce Lee, or Superman vs Hulk on the last season.

Eastern bias? What the hell is eastern bias? Eastern "hemisphere" bias as in geographic Africa and all of Eurasia?
Or do you mean "Eastern" as in you lumping together a bajillion different civilizations an cultures together that have absolutely nothing in common, and call them eastern just because they happen to be east of the Greece?

Don't forget how the Spartan beat both the ninja and samurai.

Save the sweeping, trolling generalizations for the SpikeTV boards, if you would.

Long range: Superman heat rays, Hulk picks stuff up and throws it at you (more often than superman)
Medium Range: Superman tornado/ice storm breath, Hulk thunderclap shockwave
Short Range: Superman super punches/kicks, Hulk super punch/kick/smash
OK. Superman at long range, Superman at medium range and Hulk at short range. Not counting kryptonite. What is Hulk's weakness?
What about superfriends vs. legion of doom?

Off topic slightly: I'm looking for a respectable book on the history of modern Vietnam (1600 onwards-ish), but I can't find anything on Amazon. Do you have any ideas?

Many Samurai went podgy and fat towards the end of the Edo period, particularly in Edo itself.
