    Angry Smilies

I hate them. They make me sound like a little kid or some immature teen (yah, I know, shuddup ) but I find that if I do not use them, then so much of what I say appears mildly to moderately insulting. IRL, that same stuff would not hurt a fly (although some of the stuff prolly could), but without the context of speech, online, it can quickly turn offensive without the intention of doing so.

In fact, it felt like half the infractions I got were misunderstandings that could have been remedied by smilies (of course, the other half was still because I was an ****). But I hate smilies. I dislike being banned since I miss all the Backroom debates, so I have a paradox. Eventually, with too many bans, I decided to go all out, and unleash the plague of the smilies. So far, I am totally clean since my last winter, month-long vacation - which coincided with my Uni vacation (hugs & kisses and Merry Late Christmas Ser Clegane ).

So it's working. But I hate smilies. They screw up perfectly serious posts in the Backroom and make me look like a dunce in the middle of a bunch of professors (intermingled with some freshman students, if I daresay so )

And also, I use the : tongue : too much. Damn the tongue Asdgsdhagadrfighpoderuadhersy;sdrihyaeroiaehrjhoyhsez)(@%^(_#!^79*%@2)*@#_1)!@+^!.....

    Grrrr...

Any thoughts? I actually read in one of my textbooks that smilies can and should be used in official e-mails precisely because so much of what we say is body language (which is not conveyable because the cursed smilies apparently clog the tubes)...

I thought B-word and D-word were alright, since they are often used in semi-vulgar manner. I also read that when you say 'he/she was about that' - it is fine to utilise the B_word. I remember hearing it in a G-rated animated film, and according to http://www.usingenglish.com/ - great site for word usage BTW, such use of the B-word is indeed acceptable.

Not sure about the demotivator though. Shame, it is amusing in its own vulgar and random manner. However, the first line did make me cringe a little... Meh...

Anyhow, life is not fair, ACIN. I too had very similar situations to yours :hugs: Also, snitches get stiches

I take college classes online. Apparently the online campus is an acceptable envrionment in which to use emoticons, because a lot of people do it. Even the teachers.

I don't know if that's releveant but then again I"m not sure what the point of this thread is.

Swearing is not appropriate content for the Org. This is a PG forum and as such a strict no-swearing policy is enforced. All further discussions of it should be taken to the Watchtower.
Rest in Peace TosaInu, the Org will be your legacy

I thought snitches get riches. Or at least a relocation to hawaii where after being tracked down, an assassination attempt with the use of snakes on a plane is implemented only to be stopped by the biggest ****** on the planet.

Smileys, smilies and smilees are necessary, as you said, to show body language and emotions, to provide necessary data in addition to the text that would otherwise make you sound like one of them big aliens in Mass Effect: "jokingly, hey buddy, what's poppin'?"; "sad, my grandfather just got an infraction on the org" etc.

I think one of the reasons they make you look a bit stupid at times is the choice of colour and that they are usually in a comic style. But I'm rather happy with the ones we have here, compared to those in ICQ they're really great.
