Downloadable version for
sale on Gamersgate. Now go and buy it, curse you!
Buy it and experience some of the greatest stealth gameplay, atmosphere, and story telling to feature in a game. Buy it in memory of Looking Glass Studios, one of the greatest PC development houses to bless this planet. Buy it to explore some of the most memorable levels included in any game, great rambling sprawls with multiple paths through them. Buy it to experience the humour. Buy it to understand my user name.
Look, really, just go buy it. It's a true classic of PC gaming.
Wonder why Good Old Games doesn't have it? This is the kind of game that service is designed for. D2D, Impulse and Steam don't have it either, just Gamersgate.

Maybe Gamersgate struck some deal with whoever holds the Thief rights to release it first? I'll get it at a later date. Too many games to play atm.
YES!! PRAISE THE GODS!! YES!! YES!! YES!!
Finally I can play it on my Vista!! Now if only they would come out with a downloadable version of The Metal Project (the best

)!
I think that I will make my first ever Gamersgate purchase when I get home tonight.

Sure about that? I know GOG makes them all compatible but Steam for example doesn't in my experience.

No thanks, I've still got my original Thief and Thief II disks. :3

It will not work for computer illiterate people who don't know how to google.

Good girl.
Thief worked on vista for me by the way, no problem at all. You just have to install Thief 2 first, no idea why.
And everything the Frogmod says. This is my favorite game ever, nothing comes close to this absolute masterpiece. Get it, play it, love it. Then play and love the
tons of fanwork by a rabid audience of hardcore fans who are devoted to this game even today. You wouldn't believe what some have pulled of with this ancient engine.
THIEEEEEEEEEEF

Also, Gamersgate fails so hard for giving us Thief: TDP but not the superior Thief: Gold.

awesome games, not interested in buying them from gamersgate.
[edit] ooh, just seen the magic phrase: "DRM: DRM Free"
what does this mean in the context of gamers gate?
does it really DRM free, a-la GoG, i.e. just an .exe? [/edit]

Mwah, the Thief guild level really sucked.
frogbeastegg 18:38 02-12-2010
Heh, taffers who already have the games are exempt from the command to buy. It's the other 99.999% of the population which needs to comply. Any version of Thief is better than no version
Still got my original Thief, Thief: Gold and Thief II CDs in place next to System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, right on the small section of rack next to my monitor.

Based on the other DRM free games I have from the services, yes. There's no launcher or overall program like Steam or Impulse.

lol, the best games ever, no contest. Why is it that usually people who like one like the others too? :P Must just be good taste.
Maybe because they are the best games ever???

lol, absolutely. Too many bubble-gum console addicts in their teens out there. People have forgotten what real games are like!

That is a gem that belongs only to those who truly appreciate the game.

Oh? So if I buy SoaSE on Impulse, I'll have to download some useless program such as Steam to play it? Terribad, seems that I'm going to buy a non digital version then :-(

If you want patches Sins is tied to Impulse regardless. My version of Sins is the retail box one and patches can only be obtained via Impulse's automatic update system.
Outside of updates, you can completely ignore Impulse. You can launch games without it and it will not launch itself to run in the background at the same time like Steam insists on doing. Nor are you required to go into a special mode to play without an internet connection.
NB: This information is good for the basic Sins game. Don't know if it's been changed with any of the expansions or the trinity version.

lol, I got nothing against people who play consoles, I was referring to a certain brand of them (the mainstream one at that :P). The thing is that honestly, less and less people are interested in serious games with any sort of depth, storyline, or anything else that requires thinking. They want a mind-numbing escape from reality where they don't have to think at all. Or at least that is what a look at successful console titles would make you believe.
Mwah, games have gotten much better overall, but you can't expect true genius to emerge every year. Thief touched a nerve of a niche audience, and it still does, it's amazing how much fan-support such an old title still has. We are insane!
But with Thief I understood immersion for the first time, I could almost feel the walls, feel the moist cold of the night, truly hear and even smell the city, it was an amazing experience to be sucked in so much. You were really there in that twisted alternative reality these idiots at looking-glass thought up.

Technology has gotten better I will agree. Graphics have gotten better, huge strides have been made to allow you to do more things in games, etc, but for all of that, games still stink. :P When it gets down to it, what makes a game isn't fancy graphics or being able to put 50000 people on a map at any one time, it is the immersion, the depth, the atmosphere, way that the game plays through. That requires creativity, not just crunching numbers. I honestly think that designers just do not put enough creative energy into their games. They do not have to, they know that if they put a lot less energy into it and a little more polish that the easily pleased modern gaming crowd will throw away thier money on it.
Games like Deus Ex and Thief weren't just game mechanics with a random world wrapped around them, they had real soul. They were games that were driven by a storyline (other in the case of Thief 2), by a feel, and by a world, and the game mechanics were meant to compliment those. It is like a movie, would you make a movie based on some filming technique or CGI that you want to try out, and then add in storyline and characters? Of course you wouldn't, and Roleplaying games should be no different.
There are still plenty of good games, but the PC got treated badly, it's happening on consoles nowadays. But it will never be the same. The last imho true pc game was STALKER, right up there with Deus Ex and Thief.

Yeah, but throw away Deadly Shadows.

Froze on the training mission. A bad omen?
Edit: Nothing of the sort. Thief just doesn't like dual processors. First level was good stuff, though before I get any further I'm going to start again on Expert.

Open the Task Manager, right click your Thief process, choose Set Affinity, uncheck all but one CPU.

Surprisingly, I never played this. Based on what I'm reading here, and what my brother mentioned long ago, maybe I should. I like being sneaky/stealthy etc. so it looks like something I might like. Are you sure the dated graphics won't be too much of a detraction from what otherwise seems to be a first-class game?

lol, not at all. They are nothing to modern graphics, but they get across what whey seek to represent. The game will draw you in with its sounds, shadows, etc. It is the best gaming experience out there.
Yes! Oh yes, my woodsie love <3
How I love this taffin' game.
