I need something sober (black and white or sephia would be cool).

A man with a long, black cloak, walking in a narrow street (medieval or 19th century-ish (think Jack the Ripper)) and holding a shining silver dagger in his hand. It needs a dark atmosphere and the text "The daggers are hunting", preferably in silver letters.

Is there a free "GIMP for dummies" manual, somewhere on the internet?

Sounds challenging, in a good way.

As for tutorials you may look to the TWC, or the internet. i think the best method of learning with GIMP is by simply using it and trying different things.

some are photoshop, some are GIMP, some of the artists there have epic skills, I just set this up as a solution for orgahs.

Thermal, that second one looks like they are dancing in a line, and just missing the spotlight and cane to tip it all off.

The lighting on the guy is a bit random for a back alley but at least he stands out

I agree Beskar I get the feeling he wasn't looking for that kind of effect but its there just in case.
