Thread: Unassigned Heir

    Default Unassigned Heir

Something happened I don't understand. My heir came of age and was listed as "unassigned." I decided I wanted him to command a horse archer unit, so I shut off all; troop production for a season, except one horse archer. He was not assigned to that unit. So I tried again next season. Same result. So just to see what happened, I made only YA's for a season. Still no assignment. In the fourth season I made one unit of ND only, and he was assigned to that.

So what's the deal? Why wouldn't he join one of the horse archer or YA units?
In those simple times there was a great wonder and mystery in life. Man walked in fear and solemnity, with Heaven very close above his head, and Hell below his very feet. God's visible hand was everywhere, in the rainbow and the comet, in the thunder and the wind. The Devil too raged openly upon the earth; he skulked behind the hedge-rows in the gloaming; he laughed loudly in the night-time; he clawed the dying sinner, pounced on the unbaptized babe, and twisted the limbs of the epileptic. A foul fiend slunk ever by a man's side and whispered villainies in his ear, while above him there hovered an angel of grace . . .

Sounds like a bug/glitch. Once come of age, an heir should take command of the first unit trained, even if it's a unit of Ashigaru.

Perhaps your heir prefers to fight on foot. At least he didn't wait for a ashigaru to be produced!

edit: Will STW work on windows 7 pro? I upgraded and want to play but I don't want any issues. Sorry but I didn't search any other threads. I don't mind playing on a low resolution.

It's a strange issue, I've not seen it before. I wonder if it's due to a corrupted save.

There may be a new workaround for the resolution issue in STW/MTW under Vista/7.

I have noticed that when clicking on the Heirs Information parchment, heirs can be listed as unassigned even though the AI has not yet informed you that an "Heir has come of age". The delay between the two can be up to or maybe more than a year!!

Is it possible you noted the unassigned heir via the "parchment" rather than by being advised?

NB: If you have any troops in training when you get advised by the AI, you may ( or may not ) find that the assignment has already taken place.

As a matter of fact, I had been monitoring the parchment. I don't remember when the announcement came, but you could be right. I take it that the heir cannot be assigned until the announcement comes, regardless of what the parchment says?

off topic: in regards to STW and Windows 7...I don't know if it would be bad for the operating system. Perhaps dumb, but my computer was buggy and I sent it in for repair and windows upgrade. I got it back and installed ETW and M2TW, restarted and windows wouldn't load. I brought the computer back and it seems my motherboard was corrupt and they put in a new one. Now everything works fine and I have yet to install any of my older games. M2TW probably didn't cause windows not to load (recommended for XP), but I'm alittle nervy now as I don't want to send my computer in for repair yet again. Could you enlighten this wimp as to a game optimized for WIndows 98 would not crash windows 7 if installed? Again, I don't mind low resolutions and the game crashing and/or being unplayable, I can just uninstall it.
on topic: I never used to pay much attention to heirs coming of age, just let them fall into what ever unit was available. I found enjoyment in tenderly using them in combat so as not to have them killed in melee. Holding them back, charging them, etc. A true general earns his rank fighting in the front lines, inflicting close quarters kills and inspiring his men with bravery. To pepper the enemy from afar atop a horse to run down routers at the end of the battle seems slightly cowardly in my opinion. Ya know, for his honor and his glory...

I'm almost certainly sure that the "your heir has come of age and is ready to serve you" message only appears when the unit that the heir leads is actually trained and appears in the campaign as a unit for the first time.

IIRC you do not get warned at all about heirs coming of age on the heirs parchment and showing up as "unassigned", this is why you have to check the parchment to avoid any new heir taking leadership of a unit of Ashigaru or other unsuitable unit.

I can't say for sure - but I think so. I sometimes attempt to assign a paticular unit when I get the message ( if I can ). However, this is usually impossable due to the many units in training at any one time.
It is easiest to do near the start of the game or when Funds are low and training queues are small.

Whatever I may try to do, unless I have trained only 1 or 2 units, this is always what occurs anyway.

I could not confirm or deny this. Usually it's correct, but I am uncertain if it is always so.

Not my experience to date ( 7 campaigns so far ). The heirs parcement lists heirs as unassigned once they hit 16 ( or so ) until they are Auto allocated to a unit. Between 3 and 5 ( or so ) seasons later a message appears ( not on the hiers parcement - just general ), advising you that an heir has come of age. At this point it is usually too late to choose the unit that the heir is assigned to.

If you have any further ( precise ) information, pray tell, as I think it would be of some interest to us.

    I agree with this.

Precise? "Some" interest? Do you realize how this statement sounds? 7 campaigns so far? Asai has been here for years, and I would guess has played hundreds of games, and has played other TW games as much or more. He has as much knowledge about STW and MTW than anyone else that comes here anymore.

Consider that we and others here have been patrons in the Sword Dojo for years (this is my seventh), helping people who stop in as much as we can. No one here has all the answers, but between the lot of us, we usually arrive at a mutually acceptable opinion by the end of a given discussion--unless that discussion is disrupted by someone not minding their manners .... So please, how about leaving the snobby, disrespectful tone at the door.

I don't think my post showed up. If it does later, my apologies for double posting.

Easy Masamune! Maybe DE88 didn't express himself in the best way, but he probably feels the same way I and most noobs feel - grateful for the chance to consult the experts. He's admitted he's only done 7 campaigns (which is more than I have), so I'm sure he's not claming to be Asai's equal in terms of knowledge and experience.

I too would like more precise information, but we all understand that not even the experts can always provide it, so I am grateful to those who took the trouble to tell me what they can.

DE88, I think what Asai meant is the same as what you said anyway. That is, "you do not get warned at all" (by a pop up message) when heirs go to "unassigned" status. That's why Asai advised us to check the heir parchment (since you will not be warned by a pop up) and make sure we only train suitable units when an heir is in unassigned status. Reread it DE88, and I think you will find that no other interpretation of what Asai said makes sense.

Please correct me if I misunderstood you, Asai.

    Back on topic please gentlemen.

The heir process is fairly simple:

    1) The new heir appears on the heirs parchment as "under age" - an info parchment something like "your wife has given birth to a son, he will mature in 16 years" (audio: "noble lord, excellent news, you have a son!") appears informing you of this.

    2) The heir eventually matures and his status switches to "unassigned".

    3) The heir takes command of the next trained unit and the info parchment "your heir has come of age and is ready to serve you" pops up when the unit is trained.

It's worth noting that heirs in STW are set at hardcoded dates, unlike the randomly generated ones in MTW. This means that the clans can theoretically "run out of heirs".

Always a sad truth when the AI throws all his family members away in battles and his large empire goes ronin. Requiring a less strategical means to an end as far as the player's campaign goes.

edit: My first experiment with the quoting option. It would quite well, I am pleased. Yay!

Thank you for the precise details given. This is indeed how I understand it too.

Thank you. It's nice to know that some people at least don't jump to unmerited conclusions.

You are correct I did misunderstand. Sorry Asai.
