I just got STW today. When I tried to install it I got a message that I need a code which is in the white box on the CD case. I guess its not the original CD case because there was no code. Is there anything I can do about it?

In those simple times there was a great wonder and mystery in life. Man walked in fear and solemnity, with Heaven very close above his head, and Hell below his very feet. God's visible hand was everywhere, in the rainbow and the comet, in the thunder and the wind. The Devil too raged openly upon the earth; he skulked behind the hedge-rows in the gloaming; he laughed loudly in the night-time; he clawed the dying sinner, pounced on the unbaptized babe, and twisted the limbs of the epileptic. A foul fiend slunk ever by a man's side and whispered villainies in his ear, while above him there hovered an angel of grace . . .

The old original. The seller has told me what he thinks is the correct number. I will check on that as soon as I can and let you know how I get on.

Problem solved. Thanks for advice.

Have fun BB, and if/when you feel like it share the experience with us. Also don't forget to patch the game with the 1.12 patch. Version 1.0 has an array of annoying bugs including the infamous routing bug that can make battles frustrating.

Its actually fun to be a Newbie again, and get surprised in ways that MTW can't surprise me any more.
1: Hey the enemy spearmen are really smart! They figured out exactly which of my men are on horses and went for them.
2: What do you mean my Daimyo got killed chasing the enemy from the field? They can fight and run at the same time now? Hey, at least the "You didn't have an heir dummy, so watch your Daimyo's funeral" cut scene was pretty cool.
3: My watch towers don't keep out the men of darkness?!? Help! Guards! Guards!
4: I can't build a sword dojo because I haven't got a legendary swordsman? Funny. You would think there would be someone in 15th century Japan qualified to teach kenjutsu. Who taught all those archers to use their swords anyway?

You won't be, and shouldn't be, let down by such an antique masterpiece!
Personal fave: 'The enemy diaymo lacks courage and honor! He's running for his worthless life!'

Hello BB,
1. STW was the tw game with the clearest RPS gameplay. In MTW also spears go after cavs, however they are defending and low morale units and so unfit really for chasing knights and other overpowered mounted horrors around. In STW spears are really a very decent backbone unit for all armies and all weathers, and - as advertised - effective anticavalry.
2. be aware that in the STW engine you cannot disengage troops once engaged, unlike in MTW. This strengthens the RPS as it makes match ups really an important gameplay part. As you noticed fleeing units also keep partially fighting, especially if you chase with units that can do badly against them, say chase yarisam with horse archers or warrior monks with yari ashigaru; expect casualties in such cases.
However as i mentioned in the past, be sure to patch your game to v1.12 - as version 1.0 (unpatched original) suffers from the infinite charge rout bug ie units that flee get and infinite frontal charge bonus. This effectively makes encirclements impossible as fleeing units instead of being massacred in enclaves they brake through while inflicting very heavy casualties to the units that stand in their retreat route. If you haven't done this you may lose battles and Daimyos that you should have won.
3. The upgraded towers do catch them though - although they are a tad too expensive - prefer Shinobis instead.
4. In fact historically during Sengoku Jidai, kenjutsu and all the arts of the bugei (martial arts), underwent profound transformation and development and by the middle of the period a number of outstanding masters that had fought dozens of battles and duels throughout the country were given patronship by the Tokugawa's and other winning Daimyo's. Such a case was Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (who by the way appears in the game as an Uesugi hero/general), that tought the later official intrsuctors of the Shogunate, the Yagyu family his yagyu kage (shadow) ryu (swordmanship school). The family moved to Edo after being invited personally by Ieyasu in the Edo period (from their original fiefs in Yamato) where they kept instructing all the Shoguns of the Tokugawa dynasty and producing such legendary figures like Yagyu Jubei.
The game represestation of the phenomenon is quite accurate; such masters made a name for themselves in inter-clan Sengoku warfare, Kamiizumi Nobutsuna in particular headed a legendary unit of 13 spears in a small uesugi-allied border town in Kozuke against the assaults of the takeda that heavily outnumbered the garisson. Shingen that was directing the assault personally asked Nobutsuna to join the Takeda, but he, politely, refused and continued on his path towards perfection of the kage ryu that he was developing with his two assistants.
PS Shingen did left his mark on the man though by sligtly changing his name; the Nobu of Nobutsuna comes from the nobu of Harunobu, Shingen's original name prior to becoming a buddhist monk.

I don't think so Jef,
iirc WE is already patched to 1.02 which is the most recent version for the game with MI. Just to be sure check in the menu screen what version you have. The 1.12 patch is only for the original release, and not for the game when MI is installed or for the WE.

this would explain my problems to run the game after installing the 1.12 patch (i have the gold edition, which is the same as the we according to some posts in other threads)
so i've stumbled across the 1.02 beta patch for the warlords edition which seems to be the latest for this version. i installed it without problems, but it still says "version 1.0" in the main window...well i'm going to sleep and will try tomorrow (2am here)
btw the page: http://mizus.org/files/files/STW_WE/Patches/
1: Its my impression that the STW spears do a better job of picking out mounted targets, but that this can be exploited to pull them out of position more easily than their MTW counterparts. I'm not sure if this is true, or if I've just seen one or two unusually dramatic examples.
2: Thank you. I'm patched up now. Just not in time to save that first Daimyo.
3: Point taken. I even find the unupgraded watch towers rather pricey considering how often my boarders change.
4: This information makes the legendary swordsman event more believeable and more interesting. However, I just don't buy the idea that there were no sword instructors available in Japan until some legendary warriors suddenly showed up. It would be more convincing if you needed the legendary swordsman to make a legendary sword dojo. A common sword dojo could be run by a more ordinary teacher, and even a superior dojo would require only a better quality teacher, not a legend.

I understand what you are saying BB, however Japan was (and is) a country that reputation (and honor) played a very high part in society. There were in fact many teachers in Japan however nearly always only legends (the very best) were given official permissions by Daimyos to open up schools in their territories. Given the fact that they were as you say many teachers and the art was widely practised one wanted only the very best.
Also notice that there are common sword units (the Sam Archers that use their katanas, the Sam Horse Archers that also use katanas and the Heavy Cav that also use katana's) that are completely independent of the Sword Dojo series of buildings. The sword dojo produces specialists of the sword (the No-dachi sam) rather than mere users.

i was trying the 1.02 euro one. at least it mentioned the gold version in the installing menu
I think that the "euro" bit refers (obviously) to the provenience of your copy. These patches are certainly applicable to the original+MI. They could be applicable to the Warlord Edition/Gold Edition too or they could be not (in which case the version 1.02 is the version 1.0 of teh combined edition). I'm sorry i can't be more of assistance as i have the game installed. I'll try look around and see what i can find.

I guess that makes sense. The legendary swordsman is a cool feature, and I now understand that it is accurate too.
I've taken a liking to the throne room as well. I got my first visit from a Portugese emmisary, and the game designers did a good job of showing how uncouth and strange Europeans would appear to Japanese at that time. I've nicknamed the guy to the left of the door "Lord Fortune Cookie" because he gives out free snippets of advice.

The new kid on the block has another question.
Is it possible to have both the original STW and STW gold installed on the same computer, so you can play the original version, and still play the mongol invasion campatin. I thought it was possible and tried installing the gold to a different folder thatn the original, but I got an error message that said I would have to uninstall the original before I could install gold.

1) Install original STW and patch to 1.12
2) Rename installation directory to e.g. "Shogun Total War Original"
3) Install STW Warlord Edition ("Gold") - (or install STW + MI and patch to 1.02) from the setup.exe in on the CDROM (not the autorun launcher).
4) Create link to the "shogun.exe" in the "Shogun Total War Original" directory. Done.

It did not work for some reason.
I think I will try doing it in reverse (uninstall original, install gold, then install original) but I can't do that for a while because I want to finish my current campaign first.
