I almost never charge with my HA even more so against a phallanx. And i wouldn't say HA are over-powered anyway. It takes 3 units of Pahlavan Shivatir(shooting from all sides) to completely destroy a unit of pantodapoi or clerouchoi phallangitai (on medium settings).Of course once horse archers start maxing up silver chevrons things change in my humble oppinion only nomad FM (Pahlava/Saka/Sauro) are seriously overpowered: Used en masse they can run through (almost) everything in a frontal attack, they can shoot (but that's when they're also at their weakest especially against Hetairoi which can charge them with lances) and are IMMUNE to missiles.Plus you get to field quite a few of those tanks at ridicously low price of 200 mnai/turn (and of course they regenerate).Cataphracts are similarly overpowered however their high cost-demands (MIC-recruitment-upkeep) kind of "temper" this edge. All in all i'ld say the nomad FM's are their faction's saving grace.
Ongoing Campaigns: Baktria, Casse, Koinon Hellenon, Pahlava.

    Abandoned/Failed Campaigns: Aedui-Epeiros-Pontos-Saba-Saka Rauka-Sauromatae. (I'll be back though!)

Yeah, but when you are galloping at the full speed, I'm sure you can't aim precisely to a soldier that lies 180 m beside you....
And I must said that the melee cavalry aspects are not overpowered... it was true in real life anyway, but the way they shoot is just ridiculously supreme

Well i'm not an expert but i suppose that the secret lies in aiming at enemy-dense masses. An enemy contigent taking up 100 square meters is hardly difficult to hit... wikipedia (which is by no means an authority) states that during the battle of Carrhae
"[...]the horse archers then began to shower the legionaries with arrows. The density of the Roman formation practically guaranteed that every shot would hit[...]"

I think i speak for all the RTW modders when i say "The most irritating thing about the RTW engine is all the things that are not moddable"

Making a realistic campaign map is tad quite difficult...

personally i dont think the HA's are over powered when you consider that they would have spent their ENTIRE lives learning to shoot from a galloping horse. Genghis Khans mongols were said to be able to hit a bird in the head at a gallop. we dont have mogols in EB but i suspect the same principal applies.

HA' are overpowered on a strategic level, since in reality there would have been social pressures for them to de-nomadise and settle once they conquered settled regions.

tell me about it; the darn engine has hardcoaded the level of skeleton animations. because of the clumsy coding, I cannot make the front rank of some of my units kneel to fire (for that SYW mod I mentioned).

and the ridiculous model limit: I mean, if they're gonna have 500 units max, they might as well have...I dunno...500 models max?
and the unit size limt: because of it, my prussian companies have only 70 men, when in fact they had ~140 men. and of course that's without the officer limit (3? why not 5?).

and i am really miffed right now at the landmass size limits: I want to be able to put North American in the same map as Europe (srsly, I realy do).

at this rate, I'm considering hange the towel on RTW modding, and just making my own game. :pissed:

otherwise, i actually do love this game, and I think its one of the best. however, they at CA could have made things a little more sensibly in regards to harcodes (I'm not saying have none, but I am calling for congruity: srsly, 500 units, but only 255 models?).

tired of ridiculous trouble with walking animations? then you need my brand newmotion capture for the common man!

Well, use the engine of NTW, or ETW... I heard that it was less hardcoded (though i'm nothing of a modder)...

M2TW did not have the landmass ratio... but if not because of that lethality issues....

that's nice and all in theory. but in practice, its just not practicable; iirc, nobody has been able to figure out how to mod the unit models themselvese (correct me if I'm wrong), and judging from their appearence (I have a copy of ETW), they realy suck in regards to accuracy*. and of course the size of the games-particularly ETW; a mod would be a drain on my and many other computers (I still use XP; my family will get a Win7 for me in the summer-I hope.)

besides, I am actually aiming at the smaller, low performance computers (or really stingy ppl like me); I want sth good, but cheap in requirements. using ETW or NTW would defeat the purpose.

*when you've volunteered for a historical project dealing with the SYW, you tend to get anal real quick about detail. must be all the lace, buttons, and cartoucheboxes

unless of course, anyone here is a programmer and can make a game from scratch-only problem is the concept might break copywright laws, esp the DMCA. and from my personal experience, the DMCA is mentally like getting skull ****** with a salt coated eye gouger-especially if false (as it was in my case).

ETW is by far the least moddable game in the series, you can't even make a new campaign map (or more correctly no one knows how too becuase CA provided zero help to modders).
