    Welcome to the forum!

They have to be in RTW\EB\saves. They only could 'vanish' if you are running RTW without administrator-rights under Vista/Win7, but that would be very, very odd.

If you are completely new to EB, be sure to not miss the EB-FAQ

Thanks a lot for the welcome and help! I think we're getting to the heart of the problem now. I indeed run Windows Vista. Until now I've been playing EB on the administrator account, but never via RMB-->execute as administrator, come to think of it. So I did that just now, and the "load game" menu showed none of my previous save games. So I started a new Romani campaign, and saved it. Having exited EB again, I now find that a "saves" folder containing my new save game has magically appeared in the folder you said it should be. So far so good, then.

When I open this .sav file with notepad, I find a lot of text. Some of it makes sense, much of it is just garbled symbols and nonsense. Am I using the wrong program?

As for my older save games, the "invisible" ones I got by not executing EB as administrator, am I stuck never being able to get at their text files? They can't be loaded (and hence saved) on administrator EB, so..

    1. editing save-games:
I do not know anything about editing, or if it works. There is a program (RomeSage, or similar) than might help you, but maybe I'm completely wrong.
Backup the file in any case! And if you want to edit text files, do not use notepad from windows, use an alternative, like notepad++

    2. your old files
Search in c:\users\.... for folders containing the name Creative Assembly, Rome Total War or EB
Vista/Win7 saves there a lot of thing related to programs, an other option would be your Documents-folder. Don't search with the Windows-search, do it manually.

hey I had the problem on vista too when I was playing on my notebook.
The files you search should be somewhere at your documents(or your personal data, dont know how this is called exactly in english Vista) in a folder which is called "virtual xxx", search for it the save games should be there, if u cant find them I look for the exact location up for you later.

btw Vista is quiet stupid AGAIN!

Did you look into C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore ??

Or any other folder in C:\Users ?
